What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vehicle Condition Inspector position at HS Brands Global?
HS BRANDS GLOBAL
Location: In Field at Automobile Dealerships
Position: Vehicle Condition Inspector
Position Type: Independent Contractor
ROLE OVERVIEW
HS Brands Global is building a team of vehicle condition inspectors to support a leading digital marketplace for wholesale used vehicles, which connects dealers nationwide to buy and sell vehicles online through detailed, standardized condition inspections. In this role, you will visit dealership lots on a recurring basis to perform detailed, standardized inspections of used vehicles. Your findings (photos, measurements, and condition notes) are uploaded through the client's mobile inspection app and used by dealers nationwide to bid on and purchase vehicles sight-unseen. Accuracy and consistency are critical: your inspection becomes the basis for a real financial transaction.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Travel to assigned dealership lots each week (or as volume requires).
- Perform a full exterior and interior inspection of each assigned vehicle, following standardized inspection protocol.
- Capture required photos of vehicle exterior, interior, engine bay, undercarriage, tires, and any damage or wear.
- Use a tread depth calibrator to measure and record tire tread on all four tires.
- Use a paint/color calibration tool to verify and document exterior paint condition and color match (identifying resprays or panel mismatches).
- Connect an OBD-II scanner to each vehicle to pull diagnostic trouble codes and check for active warning lights.
- Start the vehicle and note any irregularities, i.e. unusual noises, warning lights, fluid leaks, rough idles, etc.
- Report all findings, measurements, and photos directly into a mobile inspection app while in the field.
- Respond to any follow-up questions or corrections requested after submission.
- Maintain and safeguard assigned inspection equipment (calibrators, OBD scanner, mobile device).
- Represent HS Brands and the client professionally while on-site, coordinating directly with dealership staff to access vehicles.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Automotive Knowledge
- Comfortable identifying common vehicle condition issues: mismatched paint, panel gaps, frame damage, fluid leaks, worn suspension, tire wear patterns, and interior wear inconsistent with stated mileage.
- Basic understanding of how a vehicle should sound and feel when running normally, enough to flag when something is off.
Technology & Documentation
- Comfortable using a smartphone/tablet app as a primary work tool, including photo capture and structured data entry.
- Able to learn and consistently follow a standardized inspection checklist without skipping steps.
- Writes clear, factual, and conservative condition notes. No guessing or embellishing when documenting damage or wear. Accuracy in reporting is not negotiable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to kneel, crouch, and get down to inspect tires, undercarriage, and lower panels on each vehicle.
- Ability to open and inspect hoods, trunks, and doors, and to sit in and briefly operate vehicles.
- Comfortable working outdoors on dealership lots in varying weather conditions.
Reliability & Professionalism
- Dependable, on-time attendance for a recurring weekly schedule at the same location(s).
- Comfortable working with identified/on-site dealership staff.
- Valid driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation to travel between dealership locations.
- Able to pass a background check where required by the client.
Preferred Background (Not required)
- Insurance auto damage appraiser or claims adjuster experience (independent or staff).
- Experience inspecting vehicles for Manheim, Copart, IAA, OPENLANE, or similar wholesale/auction platforms.
- Automotive dealership service advisor, used car manager, or detailer (current or retired).
- Automotive technician or mechanic (current or retired).
WHY THIS ROLE
- Consistent, recurring assignments at the same location(s).
- Work outdoors and with vehicles rather than behind a desk.
- Be part of a growing national program for a major automotive marketplace client.
- Flexible entry point for people with automotive, insurance, or dealership backgrounds looking for part-time work.
