Mechanical Engineer/Designer

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design

• Design and develop mechanical systems, machine tooling, components, and assemblies for microfinishing machines to meet customer requirements and IMPCO’s internal design standards, optimizing for manufacturability, serviceability, reliability, cost, and efficient use of space while maintaining required performance and safety.
• Develop and improve existing and new designs and standard components—incorporating lessons learned from machine builds, runoff, service, and customer feedback—to reduce complexity, improve machine performance, and minimize manufacturing and engineering costs.
• Create and maintain accurate 3D models, engineering drawings, BOMs, part numbers, and related engineering information.
• Evaluate new technologies, components, and design approaches that may provide practical benefits to IMPCO products.

Project Execution

• Own the mechanical engineering scope of assigned machine projects, including estimating and managing engineering hours, meeting project schedules, and managing the mechanical engineering budget.
• Coordinate mechanical requirements with Controls Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, and other team members throughout the project.
• Determine when mechanical design or fabrication work should be completed internally or outsourced based on available resources, technical requirements, cost, and project schedule, and obtain competitive quotations for outsourced design, components, fabrication, and other engineering-related requirements as needed.
• Identify long-lead items and provide the technical information, specifications, and requisitions needed to support purchasing and maintain the project schedule.
• Provide accurate and complete mechanical engineering documentation for customer review, approval, shipment, and final acceptance.

Build & Customer Support

• Work directly with shop personnel during machine build, startup, debug, and runoff to resolve mechanical issues and ensure the machine performs as designed.
• Support Service Technicians during customer installation, startup, and acceptance as required.
• Participate in customer and internal meetings as needed to address technical issues, project requirements, scheduling, and progress.
• Provide technical support to Sales and Aftermarket Parts as required.

Qualifications & Experience

• B.S., Mechanical Engineering.
• 3 – 5 years’ experience in machine tools or a related industry (e.g., automation equipment, capital equipment, or precision machining).
• Experience with engines or powertrains a plus.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred); working knowledge of AutoCAD. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and ERP systems.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to evaluate technical issues and develop practical solutions.
• Must be self-motivated, self-directed, and possess strong organizational skills.
• Strong communication skills both written and oral.
• Willing to work hands-on in the plant and at the customer’s facility, including light domestic and international travel (approximately 10–15%).

Salary: $75,000 - 85,000/yr plus OT paid for hours over 40 and Double time for hours over 58 per week
