Summary
We are currently seeking a Senior Design Technician to join our Illinois Transportation Structures team. This role is ideal for a highly skilled CAD professional with experience supporting transportation projects involving bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other structural components. The ideal candidate will bring extensive knowledge of IDOT’s structural CAD standards and platforms, and thrive in a collaborative environment that emphasizes technical excellence and mentorship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop detailed construction drawings for transportation structures including bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and sign structures using CAD software.
- Produce full plan sets from conceptual designs or engineering sketches with minimal direction.
- Act as CAD Lead on large or complex structural projects, coordinating the work of other design technicians and ensuring deliverables meet project timelines and standards.
- Ensure all plans are compliant with IDOT CAD standards, workflows, and file structure requirements.
- Work closely with structural engineers and project managers to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and efficient delivery.
- Lead QA/QC reviews for drawing accuracy, formatting, and compliance with agency guidelines.
- Estimate design time and resources required for tasks; communicate out-of-scope work to the project manager.
- Set up and manage CAD files for complex, multi-phase projects in a way that is intuitive and well-organized for future users.
- Support continual improvement by offering input on CAD workflows, software customization, and staff training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a technical college or two-year program.
- 8 years of relevant drafting/design experience in the transportation industry.
- Strong working knowledge of IDOT’s structural CAD platform, standards, and project delivery requirements.
- Proficiency with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD; experience with OpenBridge Designer or OpenRoads Designer preferred.
- Deep understanding of design and engineering principles relevant to transportation structures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead and mentor junior staff while managing multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field visits or project meetings as needed.

Compensation Range
$71,900.00 - $112,600.00
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Illinois Salary Transparency amendment to the Equal Pay Act of 2003. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, skills, prior work experience, competencies, and geographic work location. The total annual compensation package may consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate, after a qualifying period, in our performance and discretionary incentive bonus program(s).
