What You'll Do:

 

As the SHE Officer, you will help lead the company's safety culture while ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, environmental regulations, Rule 5 requirements, and customer-specific safety programs. This role is highly field-focused and works to identify risks, provide training, investigate incidents, and ensure employees have the knowledge, tools, and support needed to work safely and return home safely each day.

 

Your Accountabilities in the Role:

 

  • Maintains compliance with OSHA, MSHA, SWPPP, Rule 5, DNR, Army Corps, and customer-specific safety requirements while staying current on applicable regulatory changes.
  • Conducts and documents required SWPPP inspections, including weekly BMP inspections and inspections following qualifying rain events, and ensures information is properly logged into Permatrack.
  • Maintains required environmental, safety, and regulatory permits, paperwork, and documentation at jobsites, including Rule 5 permits and DNR/Army Corps documentation.
  • Develops and maintains site-specific safety plans (SSSP), job hazard analyses (JHA), and other required safety documentation for new and active projects.
  • Reviews general contractor and owner safety requirements and proactively communicates project-specific expectations to field leadership and employees before work begins.
  • Conducts regular jobsite safety inspections and observations to identify hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and reinforce safe work practices with foremen and field employees.
  • Monitors construction activities for safety risks associated with deep excavations, confined spaces, fall protection, heavy equipment, and other higher-risk work activities.
  • Leads new-hire safety training and orientation, including required safety paperwork, jobsite orientation, equipment task books, and documentation of completed training.
  • Coordinates and maintains OSHA, MSHA, CPR/AED, equipment, and other required employee safety training and ensures training records remain current and accessible.
  • Leads the incident reporting and investigation process, ensuring incidents are documented promptly, appropriate follow-up is completed, and corrective actions are identified and implemented.
  • Maintains OSHA logs, incident records, training documentation, employee safety files, and other required compliance records while protecting sensitive information appropriately.
  • Maintains required customer and contractor safety information through systems such as ISN and Procore and ensures documentation is submitted accurately and on schedule.
  • Leads toolbox talks and safety communications based on current regulatory requirements, field observations, incident trends, and upcoming project hazards.
  • Works directly with project managers, foremen, employees, general contractors, and owners to address safety concerns and ensure safety requirements are communicated before and throughout each project.
  • Provides an open line of communication and support to field employees, encouraging employees to report hazards, concerns, or unsafe conditions before they result in an incident.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional safety, construction, environmental, or related education preferred. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience: 3–5 years of progressive safety experience, preferably within construction, excavation, heavy civil, or a similar field-based environment.
  • Certification(s): OSHA 30 required; OSHA 500 preferred. MSHA experience preferred. Additional safety certifications/training are a plus.
  • Functional Skills: Strong knowledge of construction safety practices, particularly excavation safety, deep excavations, confined spaces, utility work, traffic control, demolition, and heavy equipment operations. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and documentation skills required.
  • Technology Aptitude/Skills: Working proficiency with Procore, Fieldwire, Permatrack, Microsoft Excel/Microsoft Office, and online safety/inspection systems preferred.
  • Language Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be comfortable leading internal safety meetings, conducting toolbox talks and training, and participating in external customer/GC meetings.
  • Leadership/Behaviors: Strong field presence with the ability to build trust and credibility with foremen and employees. Must be collaborative, approachable, confident, organized, and willing to address unsafe conditions and behaviors directly when necessary.

Pay/Salary: Hourly Position

 

Reports To: Sr. Operations Manager

 

Core Hours: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm ET

 

Typical Work Week: Monday to Friday (45-50 hours per week on average)

 

Direct Reports: 0

 

Travel: To job sites during work hours in company provided vehicle

 

Work Environment: Office and Excavation job site environment
