Position Title: Laboratory General / Technical Supervisor
Reports To: Laboratory Director and Owner, Hillside Medical Group
Position Summary
The Laboratory General / Technical Supervisor is responsible for the oversight, supervision, and technical management of all laboratory operations, including waived, non-waived, and high complexity testing. This role ensures compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and accrediting body regulations while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, efficiency, and patient confidentiality. The Supervisor provides day-to-day guidance to testing personnel, oversees test analysis and proficiency testing, evaluates laboratory methodologies, and supports continuous quality improvement.
This position plays a key role in ensuring accurate patient results, staff competency, and regulatory compliance while serving as an accessible technical resource to both the laboratory team and the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet CLIA requirements for General Supervisor and Technical Supervisor in high complexity testing. Minimum qualifications include one of the following:
- Licensed MD, DO, or DPM, OR a Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, AND at least 1 year of training or experience in high complexity testing.
- Master’s degree in laboratory science (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, medical technology) AND 2 years laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing.
- Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science (as above) AND 4 years laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing.
- Previously qualified as a General Supervisor on or before February 28, 1992, under prior regulations.
- Military or HHS-approved laboratory training and high complexity experience as outlined by CLIA (grandfathered qualifications).
Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience per CLIA standards may be considered.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSupervision & Compliance
- Provide direct, day-to-day supervision of waived, moderate, and high complexity testing personnel.
- Be accessible to testing staff at all times testing is performed, providing on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve problems.
- Ensure test analyses, specimen examinations, and reporting meet established performance specifications.
- Provide direct supervision for individuals qualifying under §493.1489(b)(5) when performing high complexity testing.
- Oversee laboratory proficiency testing in all areas to comply with CLIA and accrediting body requirements.
- Monitor, document, and enforce corrective and preventative actions when test systems deviate from established performance criteria.
- Ensure that no patient results are reported until test systems are properly functioning.
Personnel Management
- Conduct orientation and six-month competency evaluations for new testing personnel.
- Perform annual performance evaluations and maintain competency records for all assigned staff.
- Provide staff with continuing education, guidance, and training to support professional growth and compliance.
- Supervise staff scheduling, workflow, and assignments to maintain optimal laboratory operations.
Quality Assurance & Technical Expertise
- Evaluate, validate, and implement new laboratory technologies and testing methodologies.
- Develop, update, and validate testing procedures to ensure precision, accuracy, and compliance with good laboratory practices.
- Monitor laboratory activities to ensure adherence to turnaround times, contract obligations, and cost-effectiveness.
- Actively participate in laboratory quality assurance, safety, and compliance audits.
- Investigate testing errors, document incidents, and lead process improvement initiatives.

Access is limited to information required to perform essential job functions, including sensitive data such as mental health status. PHI may be accessed through medical records, computer applications, direct patient interaction, or communication with providers. The Supervisor is responsible for safeguarding PHI in compliance with HIPAA by accessing only what is necessary and sharing information strictly on a need-to-know basis.
Exposure Determination
This role carries some potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Appropriate safety training, protective equipment, and adherence to OSHA standards are required.
