What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heat Treatment Furnace Operator & Special Processes Technician position at Howmet Aerospace (Winsted, CT)?
We’re adding a Heat Treatment Furnace Operator & Special Processes Technician to our team to run furnaces, ultrasonic cleaning, and finishing processes that keep critical components moving safely.
Role snapshot- Operate and monitor heat-treat furnaces per operation sheets.
- Ultrasonically clean and dry parts before furnace loading.
- Verify heat-treat charts and maintain calibration/quality records.
- Execute production schedules and document serial lists in the heat-treat database.
- Set up and perform airflow, waterflow, and shot peen operations.
- Inspect materials against specification; perform visually demanding inspections.
- Troubleshoot issues; engage Quality or Special Processes Engineers when needed.
- Unpack/load material; check totes and liners, replacing as required; split routers.
- Participate in 6S audits and complete end-of-shift cleanup.
- Adhere to Employee Handbook policies and champion EHS and Quality programs.
- Maintain FPI Level I and/or Visual Inspection certification; maintain reliable attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Math fluency (including decimals/fractions) and basic formula use.
- Ability to interpret charts, tables, drawings, specifications, and schedules; produce simple diagrams.
- Comfort with computers/scanners and adjustable measuring instruments.
- Experience reviewing reports/forms/records and interpreting basic data.
- Lift/handle 1–60 lb parts with proper assistance.
- Visual acuity testing required; repetitive use of hands, wrists, and arms.
- Starting pay: $21.00/hour minimum.
- Shift premiums: $2.00/hour (2nd) and $3.00/hour (3rd).
- Training may occur on 1st shift for several months if needed.
