Job Summary:

Full-Time Hourly Position

The Manual Machinist Tool and Die Maker sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The machinist drills, cuts, and shapes items both manually and with machine tools. The machinists support metal working projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing using the knowledge of machine functions, metal properties, and mathematics. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Must be able to calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and optical comparator. 
  • Must be able to learn how to align and secure holding fixtures and other work pieces, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines. 
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery and grinding work. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining and grinding process.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Must be able to learn to set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining and grinding. 
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments (micrometers and comparators). 
  • Willing to learn to set controls to regulate machining and enter commands to retrieve input or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Layout, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances. 
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter. 
  • Fabricate, assemble, or disassemble manufactured products by hand and/or using hand/power tools to examine parts for defects and replace parts when needed. 
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools. 
  • Set up and operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, and cutting equipment.
  • Competent in establishing work procedures for fabricating new structural products using a variety of metalworking machines, as well as operating and programming computer numerically controlled machines. 
  • Monitoring production machinery/equipment operation to detect and solve machine tool problems.
  • Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, and calling for repairs. 
  • Follow statistical process control procedures.
  • Adjust production equipment/machinery setup.
  • Use precision measuring tools and equipment.
  • Work and contribute to the team by performing tasks assigned and working well with supervisors and coworkers. 
  • Accept ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to the job such as updating knowledge by participating in educational opportunities (reading technical publications).
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and technical drawings.

Maintaining Equipment

  • Observe and listen to operating machines and equipment to diagnose malfunctions to determine needs for adjustments and/or repairs.
  • Maintain industrial machines by applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layouts, and machine procedures. 

Additional Accountabilities

  • Operating equipment to verify operational efficiency
  • Design fixtures, tooling, and/or experimental parts to meet engineering needs. 
  • Understand machine setup instructions to be able to establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products using a variety of metalworking machines. 
  • Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes/modifications for improved efficiency for setup and production.
  • Set controls to regulate machining and enter commands to retrieve input and/or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Good Hand-Eye coordination and vision
  • Strong attention to detail and good judgment 
  • Mathematically skilled
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Meet physical demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., standing, pulling, pushing, carrying, speaking, listening, climbing, etc. 
  • Highly accurate while meeting strict deadlines; mistakes are not easily correctable and have serious consequences.
  • Knowledge of the job: 
    • At least 1 year of manual machinist experience
    • At least 1 year of tool and die maker experience

  • Confidential Data – Access to intellectual property which must remain confidential and cannot be reproduced. 
  • Travel Requirements – Approximately 10%; we are a multi-site facility. 
  • Working Conditions – Extreme noise, heat/cold, dusty environment, mostly indoors
  • Education – High School Diploma (or equivalent)
