Clinical Nursing Administrator, Days

Howard University Hospital
Washington, DC Full Time
POSTED ON 8/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/4/2026

Role Summary

As a Clinical Nursing Administrator at Howard University Hospital, you are the on-site nursing leadership presence when hospital administration is off-site — coordinating staffing across every patient care unit, guiding patient placement and flow, and serving as the clinical and administrative resource that keeps the hospital running safely around the clock. You will make real-time staffing and patient-placement decisions, resolve operational and clinical concerns as they arise, and champion the patient-safety and staffing-effectiveness standards that define exceptional care at a DC Level 1 Trauma Center.

What You'll Do

  • Provide on-site leadership and coordination for hospital administrative functions when management is not in-house — weekdays after hours, and 24 hours on weekends and holidays.
  • Maintain efficient utilization of nursing resources, partnering with unit leadership, charge nurses, and non-clinical departments to evaluate and resolve current and potential staffing concerns.
  • Coordinate patient placement, the admission status process, and the facilitation of direct admissions during both routine and surge situations.
  • Interpret administrative and departmental policies and procedures for staff, serving as an administrative liaison, clinical resource, and role model.
  • Triage operational issues and clinical areas of concern, escalating to the Administrator On-Call (AOC) when needed.
  • Assist in resolving issues involving physicians, patients, families, and staff, and conduct investigations of incidents and occurrences during your shift, reporting to the on-call leadership team.
  • Participate in hourly rounding and ensure compliance with the same.
  • Ensure services are provided within the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of HUH, modeling strong customer service, professional appearance, and overall professional demeanor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of hospital-based nursing experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing leadership experience in a hospital setting.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and organization/time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence others.
  • Resourcefulness — recognizes problems and identifies solutions by tapping into available resources, staff, and best practices.
  • Ability to create trusting relationships and build community.
  • Ability to make decisions and direct others in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Effective delegation and appropriate use of authority to provide timely coaching to staff.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease and worker-safety program requirements for a healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
