The Construction Management Intern will gain hands-on experience in commercial construction through exposure to field operations, project management, project engineering, superintendent responsibilities, and estimating/preconstruction activities.

This internship is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities while helping students build a strong foundation in construction principles, project documentation, safety, quality control, scheduling, estimating, and team collaboration. Interns will be assigned to a project site, department, or office location and will work alongside experienced project teams, superintendents, project managers, field staff, estimators, subcontractors, and other construction professionals.

The program is designed to help students explore potential career paths within the construction industry, including roles such as Project Engineer, Field Engineer, Project Manager, Superintendent, and Estimator.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with project documentation, including daily reports, meeting minutes, progress photos, project logs, and other project records.
  • Support the project team with processing submittals, RFIs, change order requests, subcontractor documentation, and closeout materials.
  • Assist with tracking project schedules, look-ahead schedules, incomplete items, punch list items, and field quality control documentation.
  • Participate in safety inspections, quality control inspections, daily huddles, subcontractor meetings, preconstruction/preinstallation meetings, and project coordination meetings.
  • Support project managers, project engineers, superintendents, and field teams with coordination, communication, and follow-up on assigned tasks.
  • Assist with digital document management, drawing review, specification review, as-built drawing updates, and Procore-related documentation.
  • Gain exposure to estimating and preconstruction activities, including quantity takeoffs, blueprint reading, bid day activities, subcontractor bid review, scope review, RFI clarifications, value engineering, and cost reporting.
  • Assist with reviewing project plans, specifications, construction documents, and subcontractor/supplier information.
  • Learn and apply construction management tools, including Procore and other company systems used for project documentation and communication.
  • Attend required internship training sessions, professional development opportunities, project meetings, jobsite tours, and company events.
  • Prepare and deliver an end-of-summer presentation summarizing project exposure, work completed, key learning experiences, and overall internship takeaways.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on project, department, and business needs.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Learning Objectives

Through the internship program, interns will gain exposure to:

  • Commercial construction operations and project lifecycle management.
  • Field documentation, daily reporting, and jobsite coordination.
  • Safety practices, quality control processes, and project compliance expectations.
  • Project engineering responsibilities, including submittals, RFIs, change orders, cost reporting, meeting minutes, and closeout documentation.
  • Superintendent-track responsibilities, including daily huddles, look-ahead schedules, punch list management, QA/QC initiatives, schedule updates, and field coordination.
  • Estimating and preconstruction responsibilities, including blueprint reading, quantity takeoffs, bid preparation, subcontractor coverage, value engineering, cost review, and proposal development.
  • Professional communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and relationship-building within a commercial construction environment.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Currently pursuing a degree or training in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or a related field preferred.
  • Interest in commercial construction, field operations, project management, estimating, or preconstruction.
  • Prior construction experience, internship experience, related coursework, or hands-on field experience is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings, specifications, schedules, or project documents is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite required; experience with Procore or other construction management software is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with project teams, field personnel, office staff, subcontractors, and leadership.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possess a valid drivers license.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to visit and work on active construction sites, including walking on uneven terrain and navigating jobsite conditions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs or ladders, bend, kneel, and perform light physical tasks as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 25–50 lbs., depending on assigned tasks and project needs.
  • Visual acuity is required for reading drawings, specifications, project documents, computer screens, and jobsite conditions.

Work Environment

The Construction Intern may work in both office and active construction site environments. Jobsite work may include exposure to outdoor weather conditions, moving equipment, construction noise, dust, fumes, and other typical construction-related conditions. Office work is generally performed in a quiet professional environment. Travel to project sites, company offices, training sessions, or internship events may be required.
