What are the responsibilities and job description for the Before and After School Programs: Directors and Teachers for School Age Child Care position at Howard County Government?
Do you like being active and making a positive impact in the life of a child? Howard County Recreation and Parks is currently seeking energetic, talented, positive and motivated staff for our Before and After School Child Care Programs located at local elementary schools throughout the County, outside of Columbia. Work hours are Monday thru Friday; 7-9:30 AM and 3-6 PM. All programs are licensed by the Office of Child Care (OCC).
Candidates must be available for every morning OR every afternoon for program consistency.
Free training and PTO leave available for all. For those who work both morning AND afternoons, Monday-Friday, full-time health benefits and part-time paid leave (vacation, sick and personal) may be available after a probationary period for qualified staff. Previous leadership or teaching experience preferred, but all candidates must be comfortable being active with children, being a positive role model and participating in activities daily. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in education, recreation, exercise and/or sports science or related fields.
Daily responsibilities include working with youth ages 5-10 by:
- Leading organized games, hands-on and group activities in an engaging positive manner
- To maintain professional communication with everyone you encounter
- Preparing snack while following OCC regulations
- Planning school-age appropriate activities for a well-round recreation program
- Assisting with other duties as needed
Qualifications needed for each position:
All staff must be able to supply any of the following to get qualified by OCC: High school diploma, unofficial college transcript and/or child care course certificates.
- Teacher (starting salary $18)– Minimum age 19; Must have current 90 hour child care certification (45 hrs in Growth & Development AND 45 hrs in School Age Curriculum or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; Must have completion certificates for Basic Health and Safety and Including All Children and the ADA
- Director Minimum age 21(starting salary $24) and Teacher Director Qualified (starting salary $19) - Minimum age 19; Must have 135 hour child care certification (45 hrs in Growth & Development, 45 hrs in School Age Curriculum AND 45 hrs in Child Care Administration or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; Must have completion certificates for Basic Health and Safety (BHS), current BHS update, Medication Administration, Emergency Preparedness and Including All Children and the ADA
1. Must successfully pass a criminal background check, State and Federal.
2. Must meet requirements listed above.
All applicants must have OR be able to obtain certification in Standard First Aid, CPR and all other training classes required by MSDE Office of Child Care.
