Houston SaberCats Rugby is a member of Major League Rugby. We are a performance-driven rugby organization committed to developing athletes at the highest level of competition. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Strength and Conditioning Coach to lead our athletic performance program and support the physical development of our rugby athletes.
Position Summary:
The Strength and Conditioning Coach will be responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive, sport-specific training programs that enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and support the overall goals of the Houston SaberCats. The ideal candidate will have experience working with high-performance teams, with preference given to those who have worked directly in rugby environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver evidence-based strength and conditioning programs tailored to the demands of rugby.
- Collaborate with coaching staff, medical personnel, and sports scientists to support athlete development and readiness.
- Conduct fitness assessments, track progress, and modify programs based on individual and team needs.
- Educate athletes on best practices in recovery, nutrition, and injury prevention with direct collaboration with team medical personnel.
- Maintain accurate records of training loads, testing data, and athlete performance metrics.
- Ensure all training sessions and environments comply with safety standards and professional ethics.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Performance, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
- Current certification from an accredited body (e.g., CSCS – NSCA, SCCC – CSCCa).
- Current CPR/AED certification.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with athletic teams in a strength and conditioning role.
- Strong understanding of periodization, athletic development, and translation to sport.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and able to travel.
- Must possess physical ability to perform programming exercises and be adaptable to various environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with a collegiate, professional, or national-level rugby program is strongly preferred.
- Experience using athlete management systems and performance monitoring technologies.
- Background in sports science, recovery protocols, and return-to-play strategies.
- Completion of World Rugby online and in-person courses related to coaching and conditioning (Advanced Conditioning for Rugby, Introduction to Coaching, Activate, First Aid in Rugby, etc.).
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary is $60,000 p.a. plus healthcare benefits.
