Seeking: Full Time / Part-Time Materials Lab Technician

Houston Electron Microscopy is seeking a motivated Materials Lab Technician to join our growing team. We are willing to train the right candidate for this position. Prior experience is preferred, but not required. The primary responsibility of the Lab Technician will be to prepare samples for SEM/EDS and/or micro-FTIR examination, and assist with operation of laboratory equipment including Vickers microhardness testing, gold sputter coating, coating test equipment, and optical microscopy. As knowledge and experience increase, the technician will have opportunities to learn and assist with operation of our Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM/EDS) systems, micro-FTIR instrumentation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and more techniques.

This position requires a solid science background, basic chemistry knowledge, computer proficiency, punctuality, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to quality work. Hours are flexible but generally during regular business hours. The Materials Lab Technician will be trained and responsible for the following duties:


  • Hands-on sample preparation for analytical examination
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and quality protocols
  • Operate cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and sample preparation equipment
  • Train to operate microhardness testers, stereo microscopes, metallographic microscopes, and assist with SEM operation
  • Assist with operation of XRD, FTIR, and other analytical instrumentation as training progresses
  • Maintain accurate sample handling, documentation, and organization
  • Foster and maintain a clean, safe, efficient, and organized laboratory environment
  • Support general laboratory operations and technical projects as needed


Qualifications / Experience:

  • Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree; current or graduated students.
  • Study major on one of the disciplines of Materials Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Mineralogy, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical disciplines.
  • College-level knowledge of materials science and/or metallurgy is a plus
  • Knowledge of SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, or other analytical instrumentation is a plus
  • Prior laboratory or hands-on technical experience is a plus
  • The ideal candidate should have a solid knowledge base on the study field, demonstrate a strong “can-do” attitude, highly organized, detail-oriented, safety-minded, punctual, dependable, and professional.
  • Commitment to problem solving and curiosity on analytical techniques are highly preferred.  
  • Dedication to maintaining a clean, safe, and professional laboratory environment


Other Requirements

  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment and consistently follow safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while performing hands-on laboratory work.
  • Ability to handle small, delicate samples and operate precision laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move materials or equipment up to 25–50 lbs.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, instrument software, and report support.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to work independently after training while collaborating effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Strong manual dexterity for sample preparation and analytical laboratory work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of client materials, test data, and project information.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

We are conveniently located in Stafford. Our laboratory hours are 9 AM to 5 PM but can be scheduled outside this time if appointment is made.
