Waste Management

REPORTS TO: Senior Maintenance Managers Hrs/Wk: 40 hrs. (NTE 9 months)

DEPARTMENT: Maintenance Division: 47/50/3


JOB SUMMARY:

The incumbent will be responsible for safely operating the Authority’s trash truck while providing prompt and courteous waste removal services for all properties and residential clients. Must conduct daily vehicle checks to confirm vehicle complies with company safety standards, and state and federal regulations. Incumbent will be subject to the following physical demands and environments: hazardous and adverse conditions, inclement weather and outside elements, city traffic, moving mechanical parts, lifting (up to 50lbs), bending, twisting, etc. This is a seasonal and full-time position. (Not to exceed 9 months).


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements contain general details describing the principal functions of a general maintenance mechanic, level of knowledge and skills typically required and overall scope of responsibility; but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Adhere to HAP’s safety policy and prescribed ergonomic and lifting procedures as outlined by OSHA and the CDC.
  • Practice safety precautions while driving and providing waste removal services.
  • Always remain aware of surroundings. (Pedestrians, spatial awareness, weather conditions, etc.)
  • Inspect truck, equipment, and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, water, and all fluids and performs pre and post trip inspections.
  • Operate the Authority’s trash truck, pickup truck with flatbed (F150).
  • Survey grounds and onsite dumpster areas for bulk items and debris at all Authority properties.
  • Safely remove bulk items and debris from all Authority properties and transport to waste center.
  • Prioritize removing debris and bulk items from vacant units as assigned.
  • Communicate when assistance is needed to remove large and/or heavy items.
  • Provide good customer services skills; be courteous, professional, honest, and trustworthy.
  • Demonstrate strong time management skills with the ability to follow through.
  • Safely drive assigned vehicles to and from various properties.
  • Maintain a clean and presentable work vehicle by performing regular checks, inspections and keeping vehicle free of trash, clutter, etc.
  • Notify management of needed for repairs, safety issues or complaints.
  • Contribute to the mission with innovative actions and ideas.
  • Performs other related duties of the class, as required.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read and execute memos and directives from management.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to arrive at work punctually and maintain good attendance.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of work safety.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be insured under the Housing Authority’s vehicle policy.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid operator’s license
  • A minimum of one-year experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work environment involves some exposure to environmental elements, Infectious disease from waste disposal and physical risks such as moving mechanical parts; which require following basic safety precautions.
  • The employee is exposed to outside weather, including frequent wet and/or humid conditions, as well as exposure to fumes and vibration. Noise level is usually moderate.


OTHER:

  • An incumbent normally receives general supervision from another person, , who may be a senior maintenance employee, Director of maintenance, agency director, or one who holds a similar top-management position.
  • The incumbent carries out work assignments after being provided with a work schedule, determining own work methods and techniques for accomplishing. Incumbent generally works independently and exercises a great deal of independence of judgment in resolving problems in the act of repairing buildings and appurtenances.
  • Supervisor spot checks work while in progress and upon completion for acceptability.
