What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher of the Visually Impaired position at House of Light, LLC?
π Illinois (Multiple Districts) | Contract or W2 | Full & Part-Time Available
This is not just a job posting. This is a calling.
At House of Light, we believe blind and visually impaired children are among the most capable, resilient, and extraordinary human beings on the planet. We believe they deserve educators who see them β truly see them β not as a caseload, but as kids with unlimited potential who simply need the right guide.
If you have ever stayed late to help a student read their first braille word, cried in your car after a breakthrough IEP meeting, or chosen this field because something in you simply could not choose anything else β keep reading.
Who We Are
House of Light LLC is a private special education organization providing specialized services to school districts across Illinois. We serve blind and visually impaired students through direct instruction, consultation, assessments, and orientation and mobility services. We are growing β and we are intentional about who grows with us.
Our team is small, passionate, and fiercely committed. Every person here chose this work on purpose. That is not an accident. That is our culture.

π΄ Gets frustrated when systems fail kids and does something about it
π΄ Brings creativity, rigor, and joy into every session
π΄ Collaborates with IEP teams not as a visitor but as a vital voice
π΄ Is always learning β new technology, new strategies, new ways to reach a child who hasn't responded yet
π΄ Has the kind of passion that does not need to be managed β only supported
What You Will Do
- Provide direct TVI services to students who are blind or visually impaired across assigned Illinois school districts
- Conduct Functional Vision Assessments, Learning Media Assessments, and Expanded Core Curriculum evaluations
- Collaborate with IEP teams, families, O&M specialists, and district personnel

β Valid Illinois ISBE certification in Visual Impairment (required)
β Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired (preferred)
β Proficiency in braille literacy instruction and low vision tools
β Knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum
β Ability to work independently across multiple district settings
β A genuine, undeniable passion for this population β our students will know the difference
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation β contract and W2 options available
- Flexible scheduling built around your life
- A leadership team that respects your expertise and trusts your judgment
- A community of fellow TVIs and O&M specialists who support each other
- Professional development opportunities
- The rare experience of working somewhere that actually lives its mission
A Note From Our CEO
"Every person who has come to House of Light found us β we did not recruit them in the traditional sense. They came because something in them recognized what we are building. We are growing, and I am intentional about who joins this team. I handpick our people. Not because I am looking for a perfect resume, but because I am looking for the right heart, the right fire, and the right commitment to children who are too often overlooked. If that is you, I want to hear from you."
β Sierra Dockery, CEO/TVI, House of Light LLC
How To Apply
This is not a standard application process.
Send us a message β not a resume first β that answers this one question:
"Tell us about a moment with a visually impaired student that reminded you exactly why you do this work."
We will take it from there.
