Banquet Captain (The Event Host & Floor Leader)
Hotel Saranac, Curio Collection by Hilton | Saranac Lake, NY
Position Type: Part-Time / on Call, Hourly
Compensation: $20.00 - $25.00 / hour
The Vibe
Hotel Saranac is the historic heartbeat of the Adirondacks—a masterfully restored 1920s landmark where rugged wilderness meets sophisticated, upscale lifestyle hospitality. From prestigious social weddings in our magnificent Grand Ballroom to high-profile corporate retreats in our Ember, Oak, and Paul Smiths rooms, and elite cocktail receptions across the palazzo-style Great Hall and Terrace, we curate milestone moments.
An exceptional event requires more than a beautiful space; it requires flawless orchestration. We are seeking a Banquet Captain who lives for the details. This is not a passive clipboard-holding role. We want a high-energy, detail-obsessed Floor General who thrives in a fast-paced environment, commands a room with poise, and takes personal pride in leading an hourly team to deliver seamless, memorable service.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Catering Events Manager, the Banquet Captain is the primary on-floor leader responsible for transforming Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) into flawless real-time experiences. You will lead, train, and work side-by-side with our team of banquet servers, bartenders, and housemen, ensuring our service pacing, presentation, and property care always hit premium standards.
- The Field General: Lead the physical setup, service execution, and breakdown of all banquet events. Own the floor during your shifts, acting as the authoritative leader for the service crew and the immediate, reassuring point of contact for clients and guests.
- The Blueprint Executor: Review finalized BEOs alongside the Catering Events Manager and culinary team. Ensure tables, linens, bars, AV components, and buffet lines are physically built exactly to client specifications before the first guest walks through the door.
- The Team Director: Direct and pace the hourly service crew. Assign specific side-work, manage station rotations, monitor steps of service, and ensure the team remains polished, proactive, and professional from start to finish.
- The Training Mentor: Actively coach and onboard hourly team members, instilling upscale lifestyle service habits, proper wine-pouring and tray-carrying mechanics, and strict adherence to property standards.
- The Logistics Coordinator: Partner seamlessly with the kitchen team to coordinate exact food pacing, dietary restriction accommodations, and temperature timing, ensuring plates hit the floor hot and on schedule.
- The Operational Guardian: Maintain absolute cleanliness, organization, and inventory control of all banquet storage spaces, silver, glassware, and equipment. Enforce all local health, safety, and alcohol compliance (TIPS) standards on the floor.
What You Bring
- The Floor Pedigree: 2 years of hands-on experience in high-volume banquet service, upscale restaurants, or premium event hospitality, with a proven track record in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Meticulous Eye for Detail: You notice the unpolished water glass, the crooked linen, and the lagging service pace before anyone else does—and you fix it instantly.
- Commanding & Approachable Leadership: A natural ability to direct an hourly team with clear, respectful communication while maintaining an exceptionally warm, professional, and composed demeanor under the pressure of a live event.
- Physical Stamina & Adaptability: This is a highly active, working leadership role. You must be comfortable on your feet for extended periods, ready to assist with physical event setups/breakdowns, and agile enough to solve live logistical puzzles on the fly.
- Schedule Flexibility: True hospitality scheduling—absolute availability to work a varied schedule including late nights, weekends, and holiday events based on our booking calendar.
- Compliance Certification: Valid certification in responsible alcohol service (e.g., TIPS) and food handling (e.g., ServSafe) is highly preferred.
