Position Overview

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) supports the General Manager in overseeing the hotel’s daily operations and ensuring exceptional guest service, operational efficiency, and strong financial performance. The AGM works closely with department leaders to drive team performance, maintain brand and company standards, and ensure a positive work environment.

This position serves as the second-in-command of the hotel and assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the General Manager or Operations Manager. The AGM plays a key role in executing operational strategies, managing financial performance, and enhancing the guest experience.

  • Hospitality – Listen carefully to guest concerns and ensure issues are resolved quickly and professionally.
  • Service Opportunities are Sales Opportunities – Encourage team members to build relationships with guests and create memorable experiences that drive loyalty and return visits.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Assist the General Manager in overseeing daily operations across all hotel departments including Front Office, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Food & Beverage, and Guest Services.
  • Ensure operational standards, cleanliness, and maintenance expectations are consistently met.
  • Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces.
  • Lead or participate in daily operations meetings to review occupancy, rate strategy, guest satisfaction, and departmental performance.
  • Support crisis management and act as a primary contact during operational disruptions or guest emergencies.

Guest Experience & Quality Assurance

  • Maintain a visible presence in public areas to interact with guests and ensure high service standards.
  • Address guest concerns promptly and implement service recovery strategies when necessary.
  • Monitor guest feedback through surveys, online reviews, and direct interactions to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with brand standards and GLMG service expectations.
  • Coordinate VIP arrivals, special guest requests, and loyalty program recognition.

Financial Management

  • Assist in preparing annual budgets, financial forecasts, and departmental performance goals.
  • Monitor financial performance through daily and monthly reports.
  • Support cost control initiatives including labor management, purchasing, and inventory control.
  • Work with revenue management and sales teams to optimize pricing strategies and maximize occupancy and revenue.
  • Review financial metrics to identify opportunities to improve profitability.

Team Leadership & Human Resources

  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, training, and developing team members and department leaders.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching to improve team performance.
  • Foster a positive work culture focused on teamwork, accountability, and communication.
  • Address employee concerns and assist with employee relations issues in collaboration with the General Manager.
  • Promote employee engagement initiatives and recognize outstanding performance.

Sales & Marketing Support

  • Collaborate with the Sales team to support strategies that drive group, corporate, and local business.
  • Participate in sales calls, networking events, and client meetings when needed.
  • Assist with implementing marketing promotions and property initiatives to increase occupancy and revenue.

Safety, Security & Compliance

  • Ensure the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal regulations, including health and safety standards.
  • Support security procedures and emergency preparedness protocols.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure hazards are addressed promptly.
  • Ensure incident reports and risk management procedures are properly followed.

Technology & Systems

  • Support the use of hotel systems including Property Management Systems (PMS), Point of Sale systems, and other operational software.
  • Ensure staff are properly trained on hotel technology systems.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) using available reporting tools.
  • Coordinate with IT vendors or internal support teams to resolve technical issues.

Reporting & Communication

  • Prepare operational and performance reports for the General Manager.
  • Maintain strong communication between departments to ensure alignment with property goals.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and assist with strategic planning initiatives.

Acting General Manager Duties

  • Assume full operational responsibility in the absence of the General Manager.
  • Provide leadership during emergencies or operational disruptions.
  • Ensure the hotel continues to operate smoothly while maintaining guest service and safety standards.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of hotel management experience
  • At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or Assistant General Manager role preferred

Skills & Competencies

Leadership

Strong leadership and team development skills with the ability to motivate and develop team members.

Financial Acumen

Understanding of hotel financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and cost control practices.

Technology

Experience with hotel systems such as HotelKey, OnQ, FOSSE, or similar PMS.

Customer Service

Strong commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Communication

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Problem Solving

Ability to make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced hospitality environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Position may require availability for emergency or operational support outside of normal hours.
