At Hosted Backbone, our network engineers are responsible for maintaining the networks and systems that keep our organization and customer networks running. From maintaining ironclad security to supervising network updates and training users, our network team are not only IT support but also the thread that connects all operations. Deep technological expertise with a wide range of computer systems, hardware, and software is essential for a network engineer to excel in this role and help drive our organization forward.


This position will work with our engineering team on various site deployment projects. This could include but not limited to network integration, architecture designs and updates, site renovations and relocations.


Travel: May require occasional travel throughout the continental U.S.


Objectives of this role:

  • Assist in network design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Provide network support across organizational and customer operating systems.
  • Maintain stable and consistent connectivity across all infrastructure.
  • Prepare, implement, and monitor disaster procedures and recovery.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise and assist with network design, integration and consolidation efforts across multiple systems environments.
  • Addresses and resolves technical problems of moderate complexity relating to the installation and upgrade of network hardware and systems.
  • Interface with customers, vendors and local communications teams to determine the availability and needs of a site installation.
  • Engineer/implement technical solutions from a cradle to grave technical approach.
  • Document engineering standards, supports the development of network architecture and engineering designs and changes.
  • Assist in evaluating current and emerging technologies, conducts technical assessments and makes recommendation to senior engineers.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Effectively complete individual projects and tasks with some oversight.
  • Maintain network servers and associated hardware, software, services, and settings.
  • Recommend, test, and implement system and security upgrades.
  • Consistently monitor and troubleshoot network stability and performance.
  • Create, adjust, and maintain network user settings and permissions.
  • Write technical support documentation for network systems and applications.
  • Support customer networks and infrastructure.


Required skills and qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience in a network engineering role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of networking concepts and computing infrastructures.
  • Proven skills in network engineering, operations, and performance analysis.
  • Experience with leading server management and monitoring tools.
  • Strong communication skills for training and assisting users.
  • Experience with Cisco, Ciena, and Juniper network equipment.
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 hands-on configuration experience, with emphasis on dynamic routing protocols, such as, BGP, ISIS, EIGRP, and OSPF. Knowledge configuring GRE and IPSEC Tunnels, MPLS, VPLS and Remote Site and Site-to-Site VPNs. Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with VMWare or Proxmox hosting environments and associated storage.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Prior experience in the telecommunications industry.
  • Familiarity with PON (Passive Optical Network) and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) technologies.


Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams and other pertinent team members.
  • Analyze network performance data and implement necessary improvements.
  • Comply with all relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Establishes effective working relationships and uses good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other team members and clients.
  • Assesses situations, solves problems, works effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
  • Effectively communicates ideas and concepts orally and in writing and making presentations in public forums.
  • Works with their Manager to implement projects aimed at achieving HBB and/or Client mission and long-term objectives. Assists in the overall planning, organization and management of all aspects of construction operations, including general administration, planning, policy development, and field operations.
  • Maintains cooperative relations and coordinates activities with vendors and clients. Attends meetings, conducts research, compiles information, completes special projects and various reports, and makes presentations.
  • Performs additional duties, as assigned.


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

  • Professional and deadline-oriented environment in a fun office setting.
  • Noise level is typically quiet but can become loud on a project site.
  • Interaction with other team members, clients and vendors.
  • Although most work is performed within scheduled hours, some irregular hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays may be necessary.
