Registered Nurse – First Assistant (Operating Room)

About the Role:
We are currently hiring an experienced Registered Nurse – First Assistant (RNFA) to support surgical teams in delivering exceptional patient care. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment where collaboration, precision, and compassion are key.
The RNFA will assist surgeons during operative procedures by performing advanced technical functions under supervision and will also provide pre-, intra-, and post-operative nursing care to ensure safe, efficient surgical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-operative:
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and review medical history.
- Educate patients and families on surgical preparation and recovery.
- Ensure proper patient positioning, preparation, and surgical site verification.
Intra-operative:
- Provide exposure of the surgical field and assist with tissue handling.
- Achieve hemostasis and perform suturing or wound closure as directed.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and safety protocols.
- Assist with retraction, suctioning, and use of electrocautery as needed.
Post-operative:
- Apply and manage surgical dressings.
- Monitor for post-operative complications.
- Document all perioperative care accurately in the EMR.
- Support smooth hand-off to post-anesthesia or recovery units.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and scrub teams.
- Support and mentor junior nursing staff as needed.
- Contribute to ongoing quality improvement and safety initiatives.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Active and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois.
- Completion of an accredited RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) program.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room experience as scrub or circulating nurse.
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Experience in multiple surgical specialties (cardiothoracic, ortho, robotics).
- Familiarity with EMR systems (e.g., Cerner, Meditech, SurgiNet).
Schedule:
- Day Shift: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
- May require on-call rotation as per surgical schedules.
