Job Summary 

The Hospice & Palliative Care Physician will serve as a key clinical leader for Hospice Savannah and The Steward Center for Palliative Care, providing medical direction and comprehensive care across all service locations, including hospital inpatient consults, the Hospice Inpatient Unit, home-based hospice services, and the outpatient palliative care clinic.

In this role, the physician is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of care for patients and their families, delivered in alignment with Hospice Savannah’s mission, values, and established clinical standards. The physician collaborates closely with each patient’s primary and referring physicians to ensure coordinated, goal‑concordant, and compassionate care throughout the continuum of illness.

The Hospice & Palliative Care Physician will also serve as an educational resource for community physicians, healthcare partners, and interdisciplinary team members by promoting an understanding of hospice and palliative medicine principles and the benefits of Hospice Savannah and Steward Center programs. This position requires strong clinical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and a commitment to supporting patients and families with dignity, comfort, and respect.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Licensed Physician authorized to practice medicine in the State of Georgia.
  • Board Certification in a medical specialty relevant to endoflife care, such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Oncology, or an equivalent field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in caring for terminally ill patients, including:
    • A minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in a specialty providing care to patients with serious or lifelimiting illness.
  • ​​​​​​​Proven competence in the principles and practices of pain and symptom management.
  • Strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside nurses, social workers, chaplains, therapists, and volunteers to achieve optimal patient and family outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to represent Hospice Savannah, the Steward Center for Palliative Care, and HSI programs to physicians, healthcare professionals, and the general public.
  • Commitment to strict confidentiality and adherence to professional, ethical, and regulatory standards.

 

Competencies, Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hospice & Palliative Medicine

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

  • Position requires moderate to intense visual concentration, reading, using a computer and reviewing patient charts. This position has daily contact with patients, families, medical facilities, physicians, physician office staff, vendors/suppliers and HSI staff requiring excellent communications and problem solving skills and professional demeanor. This position carries a risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
  • This position encounters stressful situations with patients and their families regarding end of life care and the Physician must be able to accurately, timely and concisely document the patient/family encounter using a computer.

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

  • This is a fulltime, exempt position requiring a 40hour work week. The schedule includes participation in afterhours and weekend rotations to support continuous patient care needs. Responsibilities encompass both clinical and administrative duties, including attendance at required meetings, interdisciplinary sessions, and organizational functions for Hospice Savannah, Inc.
