Position Summary:
The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for accurately preparing and submitting claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers for hospice and palliative care services. This role ensures compliance with billing regulations, follows up on unpaid claims, and resolves billing issues to support efficient revenue cycle operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Verify insurance coverage and patient eligibility for services.
- Prepare, review, and submit electronic and paper claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with regulatory and payer requirements.
- Monitor and follow up on outstanding claims; assist with strategies to reduce aging accounts and accelerate collections.
- Research and resolve billing discrepancies and denials; prepare and submit appeals as necessary.
- Post payments, adjustments, and denials in billing software.
- Maintain current knowledge of hospice billing codes, CMS guidelines, and payer requirements.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and internal billing policies.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure accurate and complete documentation for billing.
- Generate and analyze reports related to billing, collections, and accounts receivable.
- Identify and support opportunities for process improvements to enhance billing efficiency.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong understanding of healthcare billing regulations and compliance standards, especially Medicare and Medicaid billing and reimbursement.
- Proficiency in EMR and billing software.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Excellent problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Working knowledge of ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT coding.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Netsmart, eClinicalWorks, or similar EMR/billing platforms.
- Certified in medical billing and coding or equivalent credential.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in accounting, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing or revenue cycle management, with at least 1 year in hospice or home health billing.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Reliable vehicle and proof of current auto liability insurance.
