What are the responsibilities and job description for the Boarding Kennel Lead Technician / Receptionist position at Horse Shoe Kennels?
Horse Shoe Kennels is a well-respected dog and cat boarding facility in WNC. We take pride in maintaining a clean, efficient, and healthy environment for the animals in our care, and we value teamwork, dependability, and kindness above all else. Our small team works closely together — and everyone, including the owner, is hands-on.
As Lead Technician, you’ll work alongside our team and be trusted to help oversee day-to-day operations. This is a hands-on position requiring equal parts elbow grease, attention to detail, and calm decision-making.
Key responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and maintaining kennel runs, play yards, front office, and grounds
- Bathing Dogs (0-6 per day)
- Feeding and medicating dogs and cats (including special diets and detailed schedules)
- Performing and documenting animal health and behavior checks (eating, elimination, energy level)
- Providing safe and appropriate enrichment for animals throughout the day
- Notifying the owner of medical or behavioral concerns, including emergency vet visits when needed
- Occasional evening closing duties, including securing all dog doors and performing final wellness checks
- Monitoring inventory (food, cleaning, laundry supplies, etc.)
- Helping to onboard and train kennel staff as needed
- Assisting with scheduling and covering shifts to ensure smooth operations
- Occasionally taking on “whatever needs doing” (yes, even pulling a weed or two)
What We’re Looking For:
- Prior kennel, vet tech, or animal care experience is highly preferred
- Leadership or supervisory experience is a plus, but not required
- Must be reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently
- Able to stay calm under pressure and make smart decisions when no one else is around
- Computer-literate and comfortable learning software/scheduling tools
- Physically able to lift 50 lbs and work on your feet throughout the day
- Must be available for weekends and most holidays (with advance scheduling)
- Strong communication and judgment — both with people and animals
- Commute time is an important consideration — this role may occasionally require brief check-ins or short-notice visits to the kennel (sometimes as short as 30–60 minutes)
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive hourly wage based on experience
- Quarterly profit-sharing bonus eligibility after onboarding and evaluation
- Paid time off for eligible positions
- Retirement plan (401k) available after eligibility period
- Discounted boarding for personal pets
- A healthy work environment where everyone pulls their weight and respects the work
