What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Animal Care Attendant position at Hornell Area Humane Society?
Position Summary: The Part-Time Animal Care Attendant's role is to keep animals fed, clean, and enriched, monitor and document animal's health and behavior and report to Shelter Manager and/or Vet Tech as appropriate, and keep work areas clean, tidy, and stocked. This role will require interaction with potential adoption candidates and customer service skills with shelter visitors. Part-Time Animal Care Attendant's report to the Shelter Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Care Duties:
- Clean and maintain kennels, cages, and other shelter areas using veterinary-grade disinfectants and following standard operating procedures.
- Feed, water, and administer prescribed medications to animals. Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and report concerns promptly. Monitor and document basic animal welfare: eating, drinking, urination, defecation, and behavior to identify potential issues.
- Safely handle animals of all sizes, ages, and temperaments — including fearful or aggressive animals.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for animals, staff, and visitors.
- Perform daily enrichment strategies for shelter animals.
- Conduct adoption conversations.
- Completes all necessary paperwork and transactions for animal outcomes.
- Answer phone calls and respond to voicemails and emails.
- Carry out responsibilities per the company’s policies and applicable state/ federal laws.
- Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications & Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to work independently and as a team. Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Strong animal handling skills are preferred. Basic computer skills, ability to learn internal software. Ability to operate animal chip scanner, washer and dryer, medical syringes, work vehicle, dishwasher, and cleaning supplies.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, kneel, crouch, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs. This employee is on their feet for most of the day. Schedule: Part-time, up to 19 hours per week; primarily evenings from 2pm to 6pm and weekends. Holidays may be required.
