Service Manager
The Service Manager oversees the maintenance, repair, and utilization of the company's fleet, equipment, vehicles, and support assets. This position manages daily maintenance operations, supervises shop personnel, coordinates repair activities, and ensures equipment is maintained safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory requirements. The Service Manager serves as the primary liaison between field operations, mechanics, vendors, and management to maximize equipment uptime and control maintenance costs, while providing excellent, responsive customer service.
Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. is a specialty trenchless utility contractor using construction methods such as auger boring, tunneling, directional drilling, pilot tube, micro-tunneling, and pipe ramming to improve the underground infrastructure that the United States depends on.

Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. is located in Exeter, NE, about 50 miles west of Lincoln, Nebraska. This is a full-time position, with the option for remote/hybrid work.
Reporting Relationships
The Service Manager reports directly to the Shop & Equipment Superintendent and is responsible for the overall performance of the Maintenance Department. This position directly supervises shop mechanics and is responsible for employee training, development, performance management, and accountability.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver's License
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in fleet maintenance, equipment management, service writing, or a related field
Preferred
- Associate degree or technical training in Diesel Technology, Fleet Management, Business Management, or a related field
- CDL Class A with Tanker Endorsement
- Leadership experience in a maintenance or service management role
- Experience with construction equipment, heavy trucks, and diesel engines
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead, manage, and hold employees accountable.
- Knowledge of fleet maintenance, equipment diagnostics, and DOT compliance.
- Experience with JDLink, VisionLink, or similar maintenance software.
- Purchasing, inventory management, and vendor negotiation experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and maintenance tracking systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee maintenance, repair scheduling, and preventative maintenance programs for fleet and equipment.
- Monitor equipment diagnostics and prioritize repairs to minimize downtime.
- Supervise shop personnel, assign work, train direct reports, conduct meetings, and lead shop employee development.
- Assign and manage work orders, labor tracking, maintenance records, and service documentation.
- Coordinate inspections, DOT compliance requirements, remote repairs, and emergency roadside service.
- Source and procure parts, manage inventory levels, and negotiate with vendors.
- Maintain fleet records and equipment tracking systems.
- Promote and enforce company safety policies and procedures, as well as uphold a positive company culture.
- Assist with equipment purchasing, replacement planning, budgeting, and cost control.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
