Horizon Theatre Company, a 41-year-old, mid-sized contemporary theatre committed to commissioning, development, and production of new and recent plays in Atlanta, seeks a full-time Business Manager with an interest in a career in theatre management. This position will manage the finances for the company, including finances for individual productions, education programs, play development, and community engagement initiatives. Main areas of emphasis will be maintaining Quickbooks registers, processing payments, payroll and income, managing all company taxes, drafting contracts, managing union, insurance and royalty reports, and onboarding individuals and vendors for all productions, educational programs, and company events. Required: undergraduate degree or equivalent experience, experience/training in bookkeeping or theatre administration, high level of detail orientation. Minimum 3 years post-college job experience. Candidates with experience working in professional theatre environments preferred. Salary $45,000 or more, commensurate with experience. Position mainly day hours but flexibility with evenings and weekends required. Candidates must be available to start full-time or part-time between April 1 and April 15.


Overview of Duties

The Business Manager is responsible for maintaining Horizon’s accounting registers, onboarding new employees, contractors, and vendors, processing payments including bills and payroll, paying all state and federal taxes on behalf of Horizon, managing on-hand cash, providing Actor’s Equity with required documentation, and other needs as described below.


Desired Qualifications

  • Background in professional theatre (familiarity with the Atlanta theatre community preferred)
  • BA or higher in theatre, communications, art administration, business administration, accounting, or related area – will also accept candidates with equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years post-college job experience. Minimum 2 years post-college admin experience working with a theatre company or non-profit organization or in accounting/bookkeeping in an unrelated field
  • Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Superior detail orientation
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high pressure environment
  • Must take direction well but once-trained, work independently and/or supervise small teams of employees or volunteers

Detailed Job Responsibilities


Accounting Responsibilities

  • Process all payroll and payments weekly via ACH or check
  • Maintain all Horizon Theatre accounting registers in Quickbooks
  • Calculate and pay all weekly, monthly, and quarterly Federal and State taxes
  • Deposit checks into the bank and record in Quickbooks
  • Maintain on-hand petty cash, reconcile all Front of House and Box Office cash boxes, document all cash in Quickbooks and take to the bank to deposit
  • Balance all daily credit card processing reports against sales in Tessitura. Work with Box Office Manager to troubleshoot issues. Enter all charges by detail in Quickbooks
  • Record all Square purchases from Front of House
  • Reconcile all bank and credit card statements every month against Quickbooks registers
  • Perform annual audit upon request from Cincinnati Insurance
  • Reconcile all bank and credit card statements every month against Quickbooks registers
  • Work with Development to manage and record all stock donations
  • Reconcile Quickbooks for end of fiscal and calendar year accounting
  • Prepare and organize year-end employee tax documents for disbursement
  • Prepare for and help arrange company audit, managing finance and document-related requests from auditors


Production and Human Resources Responsibilities

  • Onboard all new hires including staff, actors, and designers. Provide all paperwork, create profiles in Quickbooks, and process employment verification via E-Verify.
  • Create and send contracts for all actors and designers hired for each show of the season
  • Create Welcome Packets for first rehearsal for full cast and all present crew and designers
  • Liaison with Actor’s Equity, review latest contract, provide required weekly production reports along with dues and P&H payments, as well as other requests
  • At the end of each show, reconcile all receipts from Set, Props, and Costumes designers against purchase logs and advances. Pay or collect monies owed.
  • Pull reports from Tessitura; calculate and pay royalties due for all productions


Salary : $45,000
