Horizon High School is a non-profit (501c3) private educational institution, incorporated in Wisconsin in 2004. We are a public-private collaboration and exist with some financial support from local school systems as well as the Wisconsin state legislature (50% of our funding is from donations and grants – mainly from small family foundations). Horizon closely follows the Madison Metropolitan School District’s school year calendar, as well as operating a month-long summer school. Typically Horizon has between 10-15 students and a staff of 6 – 1 administrator, 2 teachers, and 3 recovery support specialists.
DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION:
We are searching for a trustworthy and personable School Administrator to join our learning institution which focuses on youth in recovery. The school administrator’s responsibilities are listed below. The candidate should be able to take charge of the recovery high school and provide the necessary supervision while also being detail-oriented without losing sight of the bigger picture. Outstanding candidates have the capacity to handle multiple responsibilities and don't lose their nerve under pressure.
School Administrator Responsibilities:
Leadership & Personnel Management: Recruit, hire and train staff. Supervise teachers, staff, and students; set school goals with staff & students, daily activities; ensure compliance with laws and policies.
Curriculum & Academics: Evaluate educational programs; ensure curriculum standards are met; monitor student performance. Understanding of social-emotional learning, project-based learning, brain-based learning and advanced academics particularly as regards students with substance abuse disorders and who are in recovery. Ensure that HHS teachers are following local school Individual Educational Plans.
Financial & Documents Oversight: Manage budgets and allocate resources working closely with the Board Treasurer ensuring that all financial policies and procedures are followed within the school system. Complete applications and reports to various funding and governmental organizations with Board oversight.
Data Collection and Management: Collect and manage student data (i.e., intake, demographic, academic, therapeutic, exit and post-attendance information) for reporting and long-term information purposes.
Staff Development: Provide and evaluate professional growth opportunities for faculty and staff.
Student Welfare: Support student success, address disciplinary issues, supervise AODA testing and ensure a safe environment. Experience developing, implementing and evaluating successful academic and developmental programs for students with substance abuse disorders and other recovery/behavioral challenges. To be trained in Dane County CCS program, a wrap-around service for low-income, at-risk students.
Operations: Oversee that the facility is maintained and ensure student and staf safety.
Ensure that safety and fire drills occur quarterly.
Parent & Community Relations: Acting as a liaison, communicate with parents, coordinate student academic and recovery plans with students and parents. Maintain strong collaborative partnerships/relationships with all stakeholders and develop new ones.
School Administrator Requirements, Skills and Qualifications:
A bachelor’s or master’s degree;
Relevant license and certification may be required; must be able to be certified by and meet all requirements of the WI Department of Public Instruction for certification as a Principal;
Multi-Grade level Teaching experience- at least 3 to 5 years teaching experience or equivalent experience in a middle or high school level and/or previous administrator role;
At least 5 years of experience with the recovery community or 2 years in a recovery high school;
Knowledge of budgeting and records management;
Advanced knowledge of computer systems and instructional software applications; Knowledge of educational technologies and policies, most particularly those related to substance abuse, rehabilitation and recovery;
Excellent leadership, organizational, management, and communication skills; Strong problem-solving and analytical skills;
Additional hours may be required outside of the regular school day.
High energy and enthusiastic with the ability to hit the ground running
Ability to work closely with board members to market and represent the school around Dane County and surrounding areas.
Training Required:
If not already completed, Completion of 9 training modules by WI Department of Public Instruction will be required for this position within the first 8 months of hire. The training is Choice Training, On-Demand.
Accountability to the Horizon High School Board of Directors
Provide regular communication to the HHS Board of Directors through email, phone calls to the Board President. Participate in monthly Board meetings.
Develop Monthly Reports that are presented at the monthly Board meetings. These reports communicate issues, successes, student programming providing an overview of what is happening during the month at Horizon along with successes and areas of improvement so that programs may be evaluated and improvements may be made.
The School Administrator must adhere to the HHS budget and follow all policies and procedures as defined.
Work with individual Board committee chairs as needed.
This position reports to the HHS Board of Directors and will be evaluated on an annual basis and will be required to sign an annual contract.

Because you will be the “face” of Horizon High School, the following is key to the success of the school:
Support the image and presence of Horizon High School as a strong and necessary non-profit in Dane County area of Wisconsin to non-profits, potential donors, businesses, government and the recovery community.
Develop, implement and promote an accurate and positive image of the schools’ services, needs and mission at the local, state and national level.
Make presentations to service clubs, non-profits, potential donors, businesses, parents, patient groups, etc. about Horizon High School and the benefits of the school to the community and the benefits of recovery high schools in fostering healthy educational environments.
Develop media contacts with the goal of ongoing media coverage of Horizon.
Make presentations to educational organizations and/or recovery organizations to create awareness of Horizon High School, our mission and treatment approaches.
Maintain membership in professional organizations that relate to the student recovery, e.g., The Association of Recovery Schools.
Work with the Board of Directors in developing various documents, i.e., print, and e-docs that promote community awareness and serve as marketing and public relations of Horizon High School.
Assist the Board of Directors in the development of fundraising events and marketing communications. Dependent upon the school’s financial state, future financial incentives may potentially be provided for this position if the individual brings in new donors and develops new and innovative fundraising events that assist HHS’ financial position.
Position Salary & Benefits:
Salary: $60,000 - 70,000 – dependent upon experience and education.
Contract: 12 months
