TITLE: Permanent Building Substitute (10-month)

TYPE OF POSITION: Part-time (.875 - 35 hours/week), anticipated start 8/31/2026;  FY26 salary $22.76/hour (FY27 salary TBD)

LOCATION: Middle School, Hopkinton, Massachusetts

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: All qualified candidates

In the absence of the educator (teacher or paraprofessional), the Permanent Building Substitute is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom educator. The Permanent Building Substitute is assigned to a single school building for the duration of a school year, and will report to that school each day to cover assignments, as scheduled by the building administrator(s). This will include covering for absent educators, but may also involve covering preparation periods or staying with a class while the educator attends a meeting, or in-service training. The Permanent Building Substitute may also perform various duties of a routine clerical nature, if assigned by the Principal.

DUTIES:

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

1. Reviews all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day. Maintains the established routines and procedures of the district, school, classroom, and students to which assigned. Follows all policies, rules and procedures to which educators are subject, and which good teaching practices dictate;
2. Teaches the lesson as outlined in the educator’s substitute folder, and consults with the principal before initiating any teaching or other procedure not specified in the educator’s substitute folder. Makes appropriate use of media and instructional materials;
3. Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in class, and during lunch/recess periods. Takes all necessary and reasonable precaution to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
4. Obtains working knowledge of all emergency and crisis procedures. Maintains an instructional environment necessary for the safety, health and welfare of the students;
5. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district or school policies and regulations. Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information;
6. Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered qualified for the position of Permanent Building Substitute, candidates must have/be:

1. Licensed, or eligible for licensure in assigned grade/subject by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education not required, but considered a plus;
2. Minimum of two years’ college education required. Bachelor’s Degree considered a plus;
3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to children and adults;
4. Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies;
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements.
