What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Custodian position at Hopi Junior Senior High School?
JOB SUMMARY: The Lead Custodian is a position that serves as a work leader over six custodians, overseeing custodial services for the school facilities. The Lead Custodian is also responsible for performing many of the same duties as the custodians. Hopi Junior/Senior High School is committed to helping all students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning and career and vocational development.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Communicates instructions and assignments to custodians, as directed by the Facilities Manager. Makes specific assignments to custodians as needed. Works along with other workers and sets the pace. Trains new employees, demonstrating proper work methods. Insures that materials and supplies are in proper supply. Makes sure that equipment is in proper running order. Informs the Facilities Manager when supplies and materials are needed and when equipment needs repair. Makes checks on the ongoing work, ensures that instruction and procedures are being followed and jobs completed. Keeps the Facilities Manager informed on the progress of work and any problems that may arise.
- Provides custodial services to Hopi Junior/Senior High School. Cleans offices, corridors, restrooms, gymnasium, auditorium and classrooms. Sweeps, mops, buff, wax, polish and occasionally power scrubs tile floors. Vacuums carpets and during seasonal school breaks, shampoos the carpeting. Moves heavy furniture heavy furniture, files and supplies as necessary. Works independently and with other school staff members as needed.
- Maintains restrooms in a clean, orderly and sanitary condition. Cleans disinfects, fixtures, mirrors, and water fountains. Refills toilet paper, paper towels and liquid soap containers. Washes interior and exterior windows, walls, ceilings and fixtures at specified intervals. Empties trash daily. During snow days, shovels snow from building entrances and walkways as required.
- Dusts and cleans furniture, blinds, windows, and equipment. Washes blackboard or cleans whiteboard daily.
- After cleaning is done, stores supplies and equipment in storages rooms. Maintains proper amounts of supplies used for duties, and advises supervisor when more supplies are needed. Informs supervisor when equipment needs replacement, repair when necessary, removes trash daily and performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- Ensures heating and cooling systems are turned on/off. Checks gauges to ensure system is operating within established limits.
- Performs maintenance to include such items as; fixing pencil sharpeners, adjusting desks, replacing light bulbs, cooling filters, adjusting doors, etc.
- Moves furniture, equipment, or fixtures as requested.
- Sets up gym, auditorium, or cafeteria for special events, meetings, games, or plays.
- Ensures school buildings and secured areas are open at beginning of school day and secured at night.
- Practices school pride guidelines regarding minor repairs, refurbishing, relocations of school equipment and property.
- Manage conflict constructively at all levels.
- During summer months, assists maintenance workers in performing their duties
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Communication skills and leadership ability to be able to effectively make assignments, provide training on work methods, gain cooperation, and motivate others to complete work task efficiently and safely
- Skilled in independently performing the full range of custodial tasks; including safely operating powered cleaning equipment and properly using a variety of cleaning solutions and chemicals
- Ability to read and follow simple written instructions and follow oral instruction; Ability to read manuals.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, requiring the ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, faculty, staff and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Speak, read and write in English.
- Comprehend graphic/oral instructions in English.
- Six months custodial/housekeeper experience or related training or education.
PREFERRED QUAILIFICATIONS:
- Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.
- Valid State Driver Licenses.
- Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years which include state, federal and local tribe.
