POSITION TITLE: GATE Coordinator/Teacher REPORTS TO: High School Principal

CONTRACT TERM: Ten Month (10) CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: A Gifted Education Coordinator oversees programs designed to identify and support gifted and talented students in a school or district. Their responsibilities include curriculum development, teacher training, student identification, and ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines. Creates a flex Junior High and High School gifted program favorable to learning and personal growth; establishes effective rapport with pupils; motivates pupils to develop skills; attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; establishes good relationships with parents and other staff members.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Oversees the Gifted & Talented (GATE) program.
  • Provide GATE students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
  • Provide identified gifted and talented students with appropriate learning experiences that develop potential and lead to advanced academic achievement.
  • Provide services for GATE students in 7th grade through 12th grade, working in collaboration with administrators and teachers to provide a supplemental support for increasing advanced student achievement for all students, specifically GATE students through staff development, instructional planning, and classroom support for teachers through both a pullout and push-in program.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflects accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Coordinate the process to identify gifted and talented students, including review of student data and testing of students.
  • Develop and oversee identification processes for gifted students using standardized assessments, teacher recommendations, and student performance data.
  • Develops and carries out an annual Individualized Education Plan for each identified gifted and talented student.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the gifted and talented program and implement changes based on the findings.
  • Consult with parents, administrators, counselors, teachers, community agencies, and other relevant individuals regarding gifted and talented students.
  • Plan and conduct parent meetings, including Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings (GATE Identification).
  • Assist with the selection and purchase of supplemental equipment and supplies for the program.
  • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum of the gifted and talented program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Use technologies in the teaching/learning process (Robotics, Coding, and Basic Computer Science).
  • Serve as a resource person in gifted education for all district personnel.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
  • Coordinate and provide field trip opportunities for GATE students.
  • Completes Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) end of the year reports and upload student document files into NASIS portal
  • Communicate with parents about gifted programming, student progress, and available opportunities.
  • Advocate for funding, policies, and resources to enhance gifted education.
  • Complete identification of gifted learners and the development and implementation of advanced learning plans, in accordance with applicable school, district, state and federal policies, procedures and laws, Hopi Jr/Sr. High School core values/mission and behavior expectations.
  • Serve as a school/network support and provide additional assistance and resources at the request of HJSHS stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Maintains professional competence by participating in classes, workshops, professional development and other growth activities.
  • Directs student workers, volunteers, etc. for purpose of maximizing their efficiency and meeting work requirements.
  • Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Appropriate Arizona Elementary Teacher Certification
  • Valid/State Driver Licenses.
  • Full Gifted Endorsement
  • Meets Criteria of Highly Qualified
  • Minimum of a Provisional SEI or ESL Endorsement
  • Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years, which include state, federal and local tribe.
