What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Cook position at HopeWorks?
OVERVIEW: Actively participate in the day-to-day operation and cleanliness of the shelter kitchen, cooking for approximately 400 clients per day. Maintain organization of food pantry.
REPORTS TO: Shelter Director
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Direct responsibility for organization of pantry room, food boxes and accepting food donations.
2. Pick up daily food donations.
3. Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 350-400 homeless individuals daily. Prepare and serve meals on Saturday and Sunday when necessary.
4. Manage donations and inventory by putting away donations when we receive them and rotate inventory using FIFO (first in first out) procedures. Throw away any product that is not useable.
5. Maintain cleanliness and organization in the food pantry and in the kitchen.
6. Prepare client food boxes and assist caseworkers with retrieval of food boxes when needed.
7. Ensure safe food handling and cleanliness procedures.
8. Follow proper lifting and storage techniques to ensure that injuries do not occur in the kitchen.
9. Work with the Department of Health and Roadrunner to pass inspections.
10. Participate in assigning, supervising and assisting volunteers and community service workers to ensure that work is conducted in a safe and clean manner.
11. Assist in ensuring safety of clients, volunteers, and staff by enforcing Center rules for client behavior.
12. Complete paperwork as needed or assigned.
13. Supervise Community Support Workers and Volunteers in kitchen.
14. Work closely with Kitchen Manager by communicating any deficiencies, safety issues, food quality of donations issues and low inventory in pantry.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist in development and implementation of menu planning.
2. Duties may be changed based on agency needs.
3. Clean kitchen throughout the day and at the end of shift.
4. Assist with set-up, break-down and serving of clients.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
1. High school diploma or equivalent. Culinary school certification preferred.
2. Cooking experience for large numbers of clients (approximately 400-500/meal).
3. Experience working with homeless or severely disadvantaged people, substance abusers or chronically mentally ill individuals strongly desired.
4. Experience with volunteers helpful.
5. Experience working with racially and culturally diverse groups.
6. Current CPR and First-Aid qualification or willingness to be trained.
7. Valid NM Driver’s license and good driving record (able to be insured by agency insurance company).
8. Serv Safe food handling safety certificate or New Mexico food handler card
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
2. Ability to lift 50 pounds and to drag up to 75 pounds across floor.
3. Knowledge of community resources preferred.
4. Bilingual preferred
