Description
Assists the department with custodial services as it pertains to property and evidence articles to ensure proper issuance and distribution of police supplies and to ensure safeguarding of evidence for legal proceedings.

Assists the department with custodial services as it pertains to property and evidence articles to ensure proper issuance and distribution of police supplies and to ensure safeguarding of evidence for legal proceedings.
Examples of Duties
- Receives, catalogues, secures and issues upon request various evidence items needed for legal proceedings.
- Obtains orders of destruction from the Courts for articles of contraband and destroys those articles.
- Transports items of evidence to and from the state forensic lab when required.
- Maintains evidence logs and records, and prepares reports for management.
- Processes seized money in accordance with law.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED supplemented by coursework on inventory management, purchasing, handling of firearms and police evidence, and at least 6 months related experience
- Be a current member of the International Association of Property & Evidence (IAPE), or able to certify within six (6) months of hire.
- VA driver’s license
- Basic knowledge of principles and methods associated with inventory and purchasing
- Basic knowledge of safety guidelines associated with the handling of firearms, drugs, needles, and any other potentially dangerous evidence or weapon-related paraphernalia
- Organization and computer skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of legal system
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled, pleasant environment, but worker is exposed to unpleasant-looking evidence and to potentially dangerous materials under custody.
