The MEC Summer Tutor is an associate at Hope Network whose primary responsibilities include: The overall purpose of the Summer Tutor is to support MEC’s mission of empowering Michigan kids to achieve their highest level of academic achievement in reading and math. By providing students with individualized, high-impact support, the Summer Tutor directly contributes to creating equitable opportunities for every learner to succeed in grades PreK-2nd. The Summer Tutor provides high-impact tutoring in reading and/or math practice to PreK-2nd grade students, helping them build essential academic skills. With guided support from coaches, the tutor uses scripted, evidence-based strategies and conducts pre- and post-test assessments, and scheduled progress monitoring to ensure each student stays on track to achieve grade level reading and math skills.

  1. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential requirement of this position.

Literacy and Numeracy Strategies and Assessment

  1. Conduct one-on-one, paired, or small group tutoring sessions with students using scripted, evidence-based literacy strategies provided by Reading Corps, Early Learning Corps and/or K-3 Math Corps; achieve fidelity to the scripted strategies.
  2. Assist children in improving their early literacy and/or numerary skills, abilities, and confidence to stay on track to achieve grade level reading and math expectations.

  1. Implement pre- and post-assessment, and regular progress monitor data, and document data as instructed by coaches.
  2. Work with summer staff to identify students in need of high-impact tutoring.
  3. Maintain attendance and dosage records using prescribed resources.
  4. Regularly review student data with coaches to gauge the effectiveness of the strategies being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary.
  5. Participate in regular coaching sessions (including observation of interventionist) to review student progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; receive and act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions.

  1. Communicate and interact with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.
  2. Communicate regularly and effectively with Michigan Education Corps staff including supervisor(s) and coaching specialist(s), and site personnel.
  3. Participate in all required Michigan Education Corps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions, travel as necessary.
  4. Participate in site activities that support student academic and enrichment activities.
  5. Participate in one or more site-sponsored activities (e.g., family night,) and provide education about Michigan Education Corps and general literacy/numeracy awareness.
  6. Maximize service to students via push-in to classrooms to deliver 1:1, pairs, or small group tutoring when students cannot be pulled from class due to summer schedule.
  7. Be an ambassador of Michigan Education Corps by submitting Impact Stories.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Previous experience as an MEC Reading Corps, Early Learning Corps or Math Corps Interventionist required.
  2. Minimum Education: High school diploma or recognized equivalent
  3. Must be 18 years of age or older by two weeks after your start date.
  4. Must pass mandatory background check requirements
  5. Must speak, read, and write English fluently.
  6. Must have basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
  7. Experience working with school-aged children preferred; not required.
