Job Overview
The Counselor Assistant is responsible for ensuring the safety, structure, and rule enforcement of Hope House’s residential campus. This role provides 24/7 supervision of participants and their children, communicates vital information to clinical staff, and supports participants in maintaining a recovery-focused environment. While Counselor Assistants support participants emotionally, they do not provide therapy or clinical counseling and must refer such concerns to licensed staff. Although not clinical in nature, this position plays a critical frontline role in participant accountability and safety.
Essential Functions
- Monitor campus activity, conduct hourly campus walks, and ensure safe behavior by all participants and children.
- Enforce all rules and procedures outlined in the Residents’ Handbook in a supportive yet firm manner.
- Support a recovery-oriented environment with cultural sensitivity.
- Conduct participant and visitor item inspections, and monitor participant re-entry from passes or work.
- Observe and document participant self-administration of prescription medications; distribute over-the-counter medications only when Medical staff are unavailable.
- Perform drug screens when warranted based on behavior or suspicion.
- Document daily activity through the Pass Log and shift communication notes.
- Maintain awareness of who is on and off campus at all times.
- Exercise reasonable judgment in responding to escalating situations, including initiating campus lockdowns, conducting drug screens, or requiring participants to remain in their apartments.
- Participate in fire drills and safety protocols.
- Supervise chores, trash runs, and apartment checks; report issues to clinical staff.
- Monitor scheduled smoke breaks.
- Screen all non-staff visitors via gate phone and assist appropriately.
- Attend AA/NA meetings on site when needed.
- Refer emotional or psychological concerns to the appropriate clinical staff.
- Performs all duties in accordance with DBHDD requirements and internal Hope House policies.
- Attend department meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTE: While core responsibilities are consistent across shifts, overnight staff conduct hourly room checks and ensure safe sleep conditions for infants and children.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED; enrollment in or completion of a social sciences program preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in a substance use treatment or residential support setting.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training related to trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and recovery support.
- Comfortable with basic computer tasks, including email (Outlook), video surveillance systems, and smartphones.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
