Job Purpose Statement: The Assistant Coach will assist the head coach in leading the HRVHS wrestling program. Lead in establishing an environment in which student/athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image. Direct the promotion of sportsmanship, a winning attitude and commitment to student academic success. Assist the head wrestling coach while performing leadership to assigned athletic program, coaching duties, as well as duties and responsibilities assigned by head varsity coach. May coach JV or Freshman wrestling team(s).
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in the planning and organization of practice sessions during the regulated season; to include seasonal goals and objectives.
- Embrace and support equity and equal access to athletics for all interested students.
- Assists the Head Coach & Athletics Director in maintaining the care for athletic facilities and aid in preparation of the facilities for athletic competition.
- Assists Head Coach & Athletics Director in purchasing equipment, supplies and uniforms for wrestling.
- Assists Head Coach & Athletics Director in meet scheduling when needed, especially at the JV & Novice level.
- Assists in conducting pre-season meeting with all athletes and parents, outlining schedules, student athletic contracts, and Student Athletic Handbook.
- Works to improve skills and knowledge of each athlete and the team as a whole.
- Enforces appropriate team expectations and team discipline.
- Ensures safety protocols are being followed by team members at all times.
- Follows guidelines and principles of sportsmanship.
- Adheres to requirements of athletic eligibility.
- Adheres to District Athletic Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures of OSAA and league rules.
- Works harmoniously and cooperatively with high school Varsity & Assistant Coaches, community volunteers, parents, and school personnel.
- Communicates effectively (both orally and written) with students, parents, officials, and staff.
- Assists in submitting rosters, equipment and uniform inventories and other reports as required.
- Assists in coordination of end of year awards, communications, and events.
- Assists in monitoring expenditures in relation to budget and assists in monitoring proper use, care, and return of uniforms and other assigned equipment.
- Assists in supervising and/or arranging for proper supervision of student/athletes during practices, meets travel, and related activities.
- Assists in coordinating and is responsible of all media communications at the high school level
- Consults with Head Coach and Athletics Director concerning playing conditions, safety concerns, program improvements, player performance, outside complaints, and other related matters.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance, is punctual and fulfills the requirements of the position.
- Attends and participates regularly in HRCSD Coach training opportunities. (Positive Coaching Alliance and Athletics Director led)
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
- Skills possessed will exemplify a moral character that is consistent with being a positive role model for high school students.
- Knowledge of wrestling at the high school level, to include any recent rule changes. Through cooperation and communication, assist in development of a system of play that can be effectively communicated with head coach to implement at the high school level. Knowledge of and ability to communicate effectively with athletes and parents.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others. To teach foundational wrestling skills. To organize and manage students time effectively. To use problem solving strategies consistently. Adjusts to performing practices in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. Ability to ensure the safety of student athletes and follow enhances safety protocols.
Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. College degree Preferred.
Experience Required: Previous experience coaching youth wrestling preferred.
Licenses, Certifications or Bonding Required: NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certification or ASEP Certifications; Concussion training, Heat Illness Prevention, Performance enhancing Drugs & Substances Training, First Aid/CPR Certification.
Required Testing: Any offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory results of:

Compensation will be through an Extra Duty Coaching Contract. Step placement is made by the Human Resources Department, and is based on verified prior paid coaching experience in the same sport at the same responsibility level.
