Job Title: Booking Clerk
Normal Work Week: 40 hours
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Shift: 4:00pm - 12:00am
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. An employee may be requested to perform other duties assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.
Definition
Assigned to support the Jail for the processing of inmates.
Performs a wide variety of clerical/secretarial duties in support of the Sheriff’s Correctional Facility including processing and maintaining documents, correspondence, and statistics, and to provide information and assistance to the public. Performs all clerical/secretarial duties such as typing, filing, and copying.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties—Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Perform the clerical/secretarial duties, input of all information regarding arrested persons.
2. Take possession of inmate property upon intake and record and secure in property room.
3. Correctly classify inmates for housing.
4. Process, sort, file, copy and distribute a variety of files and filing systems including the sheriff’s office files.
5. Compile data from records or other information as requested.
6. Assist in sorting and distributing mail through the Jail as may be needed.
7. Process arraignment files and records the information in the inmates file.
8. Provide information to attorneys/ bonding agents for release of inmates.
9. Process all bonds for the release of inmates.
Other important duties and responsibilities:
1. Operate a computer terminal and printer, type, enter, modify and retrieve a wide variety of reports and records, memos, letters and other materials.
2. Provide assistance to Corrections personnel and the public as may be needed.
3. Respond to telephone inquiries and requests.
4. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
5. Mail out requested reports and record searched for public and private agencies, individual citizens and the sheriff’s office.
6. Interpret for the Sheriff’s Office with non English speaking inmates and with the general public including 911 calls.
7. Train new detention officers in proper inmate booking procedures in both spillman and net data systems as well as proper bond and fine release.
8. Communicate with other agencies regarding transports of inmates ready for pick-up.
9. Maintain the jail property room.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
1. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
2. Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
3. Telephone techniques and etiquette.
4. Basic mathematical principles.
5. Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Ability to:
1. Learn and correctly interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the function to which assigned.
2. Understand the organization of the county and outside agencies as necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.
3. Compile, maintain and update files and records.
4. Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- High school diploma or GED
- Prior experience in a correctional setting is preferred.

Physical Conditions:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; lifting and carrying light materials.
