Definition:

The Grant Writer will identify and apply for various grants and will submit and perform the financial administration of grants and other funding sources to support current and future Hood County programs and projects. This is a non-supervisory position and works closely with immediate supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Research and identify potential grant funds, write grant applications, submit, monitor, and manage financial administration of grant/funding proposals.

2. Discusses available sources of funding with administrative budget managers.

3. Compiles necessary information for the application process through collaboration with other employees, database research, and other fact-finding actions and meetings.

4. Drafts and completes grant applications according to application requirements.

5. Ensures grant is submitted on time and within application parameters.

6. Completes all documents, forms, or reports required for the grant.

7. Coordinates the monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects that are funded by grants from award through final close-out with the funded department or office.

8. Adheres to record management requirements.

Required Knowledge Of:

  • General principles and practices of grant administration, including budget development/monitoring, project evaluation, and recordkeeping.
  • Procedures and techniques for preparing grant requests.
  • Principles, practices, and techniques of public accounting, and particularly government accounting.
  • Grant review and analysis of federal, state, and local laws relative to public accounting related to grants.
  • County operations and transaction practices and procedures.
  • Budgetary accounting software systems.
  • Policies, operations, and processes at the Federal, State, and local levels and stay current on upcoming changes to program requirements.

Ability To:

  • Read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, budgets, and legal documents.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Operate various office equipment, including computer terminal, telephone, calculator, fax, and copier.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with County staff and the public.
  • Handle sensitive information in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Follow and instill grant program rules, regulations, and guidelines.

Education and/or Experience:

A combination of related education, experience, and training may be substituted for each other.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, planning, accounting, or closely related area.
  • Three years grant administration or grant writing experience in a variety of types of grant programs.
  • Prefer completion of nationally recognized grantsmanship seminar program.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license.
