Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Athletics, the Director of Aquatics will develop, implement, market and coordinate all aspects of the aquatics program. The Director will maintain compliance with the Health Department and provide regular safety trainings to all staff working in the aquatics building. All additional staff, such as lifeguards, instructors, and front desk workers will be hired and report to the Director of Aquatics. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for boosting revenue by increasing memberships, rentals and lessons throughout the year.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Aquatics Management (75%)

  • Promote community participation and use of aquatics facilities as a source of additional revenue for the College;
  • Collaborate with Monocacy Aquatics Club (MAC) directors to ensure successful partnership;
  • Offer swimming classes and special events to the Hood community;
  • Plan, schedule, assign and supervise the work of lifeguards, swim instructors, cashiers, and attendants;
  • Plan and administer the aquatics budget and monitor accounts for revenue and expenses;
  • Negotiate contracts with CES and outside groups interested in Hood College aquatic facilities;
  • Develop new offerings for the aquatics programs;
  • Ensure that all rules and regulations are properly enforced;
  • Respond to questions and concerns from the public;
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, onboarding, evaluating and supervising employees;
  • Work with HR and payroll for seasonal employees;
  • Prepare for annual Department of Health and Safety inspections;
  • Offer classes and certifications for lifeguarding and first aid and CPR;
  • Oversee daily pool maintenance with chemical levels, temperature, water levels, etc.;
  • Work with Aramark and facilities to repair any issues that arise throughout the year in the aquatics building;
  • Strategize new revenue streams from the aquatics programs and work to improve existing programs;
  • Lifeguard the pool when necessary;
  • Create and communicate weekly schedules for members with time and lane availabilities;
  • Oversee and offer swim lessons throughout the year;

Assistant Coach (25%)

  • Model and instruct swim student-athletes in departmental, College, conference, and NCAA policies and procedures;
  • Assist in organizing and conducting practices during the traditional season and non-traditional seasons;
  • Develop team travel plans in compliance with departmental and College guidelines for safety and other requirements;
  • Help supervise team during all travel;
  • Assist in developing and implementing fund-raising strategies;
  • Refer student-athletes to College resources as necessary to assist with academic, medical, and/or personal issues that may arise throughout the year;
  • Represent the Department of Athletics at all on-campus Admission Open Houses and/or other predetermined;
  • Work with head coach and Department of Admission to recruit qualified student-athletes; both incoming freshmen and transfers, to Hood College;
  • Assist in recruiting first-year and transfer student-athletes for the swim teams;
  • Respond to prospective student inquiries and maintain record of contacts.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Four years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience in coaching.
  • Experience in pool maintenance.
  • Requires experience as a supervisor.
  • Commitment to the concept of wellness.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Certified in first aid and CPR.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certificate.
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor certification and Water Safety Instructor Certification.

Technology Skills

Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Language Skills

Oral communication skills to enable the incumbent to effectively present information and respond to questions from and build relationships with groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals.

Mathematical Skills

Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Compensation

This is a position with an annual starting salary range of $55,800 to $62,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
