What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Navigation Research Engineer position at Honeywell?
You will report directly to our Sr. R&D Manager within the Navigation, Controls, and Surveillance group in the Advanced and Applied Technology organization. You will have the option of working from our Plymouth, MN location or Redmond, WA location on a hybrid work schedule.
In this role, you will lead the development of cutting-edge technologies, ensuring alignment with Honeywell’s strategic objectives and contributing to our commitment to innovation and excellence. The Advanced and Applied Technology organization focuses on new technology development, and we are seeking a talented individual with a passion for developing new technologies.

This specific team has a focus on navigation research, especially supporting new technologies to advance the field of GPS-denied navigation capabilities. You will be joining a talented group of researchers and be part of exciting and innovative research. You will be expected to be a technical leader and bring experience and expertise in navigation to the group.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead research and development activities related to navigation.
- Build, test, analyze, and iterate on GPS-denied navigation technologies through simulation, algorithm development, flight testing, and data analysis.
- Lead ideation efforts to support the next big ideas in the field of navigation.
- Provide technical leadership for small teams (4-6 people) conducting research related to navigation.
YOU MUST HAVE
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
- 8 years of experience conducting research and development projects within an industry or academic environment.
- Strong background in areas such as navigation, robotics, estimation theory, mathematics, software, sensors, controls, or related fields.
- Proven track record of technical research.
- Proficiency in software tools such as C/C , Python, Matlab, ROS, or similar.
WE VALUE
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science or another related field.
- Strong experience with Kalman filtering or other advanced estimation theory principles.
- Proficiency with algorithm development including AI/ML algorithms.
- Experience with alternative navigation, especially magnetic anomaly navigation, vision-aided navigation, Low Earth Orbit satellite navigation, or similar.
- Strong experience with Linux, ROS, OpenCV, and general AI/ML toolsets.
- Experience with customer engagements and ability to win and lead new business pursuits.
- Passion for innovation and an ability to be a leader within a research organization.
