Overview

Join our zoo's animal care team in providing all of the daily care needs to over 400 animals, including chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, pigs, goats, sheep, llamas, cows, camels, kangaroos, and more, on our private farm in Berry, KY (1 hour south of Cincinnati and 50 minutes north of downtown Lexington).

This is an entry level position in our company, but does require some previous experience. Plenty of opportunities for growth.

Schedule

This position is for 24 hours per week. Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am-5pm. Fridays and Sundays 9am-1pm. For the perfect candidate, we can be a little flexible on the start and end times, and possibly on the Thursday, but Friday-Sunday are required, and there may be occasions coming in earlier or staying later is necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily care and management of animals, including feeding, grooming, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring health status.
  • Handle animals safely and confidently using proper restraint techniques for examinations, treatments, or procedures.
  • Medication administration, including injections and oral treatment.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal treatments, medications administered, and behavioral observations.
  • Participate in regularly meetings and discussions about the welfare of individual animals and herds.
  • Assist with supporting our mobile operation by stalling animals for mobile events, as well as cleaning and restocking trucks and trailers for animal transport.

Experience
This position requires previous experience working with large animals.

  • Must be reliable and consistent in attitude and work ethic.
  • Must be willing to perform a variety of animal care related tasks, including feeding, watering, health checks, administering meds and treatments, grooming, inputting data and observations into the animal care software, transporting, and cleaning (scrubbing water troughs, cleaning stalls and trailers, etc).
  • Must be an excellent communicator both verbally, and via written means (texting, software updates, etc.)
  • Must have own transportation, and be able to travel to the farm in most weather conditions, including on lightly snow covered roads OR be willing to overnight at the farm on occasions where travel may be impossible.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions, including rain, freezing cold, wind, snow, and extreme heat.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lb. and perform manual labor for up to 8 hours a day, including occasionally difficult tasks such as hoof trimming on large herds.
  • Must be able to work in a team, and independently, even in occasionally difficult, stressful, or emotional circumstances.
  • Must be proficient at handling large and small animals safely and humanely.
  • Must be able (or able to learn) to accurately calculate and give medication orally, IM or SQ (training available).
  • Must have a clean driving record (no DUIs, reckless driving charges or more than 2 moving violations in the past 7 years). Ability to drive a truck and trailer preferred (training available).

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24 per week
