POSITION: School Safety and Security Officer

START DATE: Immediate

LENGTH: Part-time (less than 600 hours)

COMPENSATION: $35/hour

DESCRIPTION: The School Safety and Security Officer will implement best practices in building safety, including but not limited to securing entrances and exits at the beginning and ending of the school day. Responsibilities include providing safety and security services for the school campus and protecting the life and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors. School Safety Officers will perform routine patrols of school facilities and work closely with staff to ensure schools are secure both during the regular school day and at events occurring outside of normal school hours.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas, including but not limited to school buildings, groups, dock areas, entrances, hallways, cafeteria, and parking lots, buss arrival and departures, common areas, at hours identified by administration.
  • Supports in directing students and guests who are in the building during the school day, prior to the start of the school day to designated areas between 7:30 and 8:05 am and afterschool between 3:00-4:00 pm. Protects and assists staff, students, and visitors ensuring only authorized individuals with proper identification are allowed in the building/hallways.
  • Adheres to and enforces policies and procedures established by the Board of Education and administration and Code of Conduct. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed by students, staff and authorized individuals.
  • Reports all incidents using appropriate reporting forms and protocols prior to the completion of shift and notifies supervisor of disturbances and or irregularities.
  • Operates school security vehicles for patrol and other assignments, at the discretion of the supervisor.
  • Secures access to building and offices.
  • Maintains proper maintenance and handling of security radios and equipment.
  • Maintains communication with all pertinent colleagues and supervisors (ex: building administration, deans, other security personnel). Maintains radio communication with pertinent staff and other security personnel.
  • Works cooperatively with the Deans' Office to assist and supervise students and support teachers.
  • Participates in all required trainings as identified by administration pertaining to school safety and security, crisis prevention and de-escalation.
  • Supports in crisis situations and emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree or formal experience in law enforcement or organizational security.
  • Retired, or active, Law Enforcement in good standing OR holding current Illinois Retiree Officers Concealed Carry licenses issued under the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • Have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer in "good standing" at time of employment separation. Or ten (10) years active-duty military experience in an appropriate military occupational skill with an honorable discharge may be substituted for law enforcement experience, provided that appropriate qualification to carry a concealed firearm can be obtained to the Board's satisfaction.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Illinois driver's license

Other Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with high school students in a supervision capacity, preferred
  • Good written and oral communication skills, and basic knowledge of technology, computers, and applicable safety and security software.
  • Available on nights and weekends periodically.
  • Experience with NIMS (National Incident Command System) preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of current trends in research and practices in public school safety as well as relevant state statutes and local ordinances.
  • Knowledge of how to handle emergency situations and the ability to act on a crisis plan if necessary. Ability to articulate verbally in a clear and distance manner during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with law enforcement, fire protection, or emergency management agencies and school district personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to make accurate decisions based on observations and perceptions handling decisions with tact, diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Flexible schedule based on specific needs and situations.
  • Successfully complete certified and nationally recognized training in rapid response/active shooter (Run/Hide/Fight, ALICE, diversity, etc.) as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to run or jog for short periods during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to stand at an assigned post for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to quickly climb and descend stairs to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to enact legal physical restraints, de-escalation, and approved crisis prevention responses.
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach in all directions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate all security related equipment including radios, surveillance cameras, telephones, computers, fire alarm annunciator panel, fire extinguisher and 2-way radios.
  • Ability to drive and operate HF vehicles.
  • Ability to perform CPR and first aid, including operating AED equipment.
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities under all-weather conditions.
