Homeward Bound, Addison County's Humane Society is looking for an experienced veterinary technician to work with our medical team taking care of shelter animals and assisting with surgery, community wellness clinics and supporting animals in need of care in the community. Our medical team treats a variety of animals and medical conditions in a fun, fast paced environment. The hours for this position are Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm. Our clients are always grateful and the shelter team takes pride in helping animals stay in their home.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare animals for surgery
- Assist with surgery, including monitoring patient vitals before, during and after surgery.
- Assist in animal examinations and treatments.
- Perform venipuncture, catheter placement and laboratory procedures as designated by the veterinarian.
- Participate in technician appointments including ear cleaning, anal gland expression, nail trims, etc.
- Administer medications and vaccines as prescribed by the veterinarian
- Maintain accurate medical records of patients using clinic and shelter management software.
- Assist with inventory management of medical supplies and controlled substances per requirements.
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care and treatment plans
- Help guide surgical volunteers on recovery of patients
- Assist in offsite community clinics
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Certified Veterinary Technician designation is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary technician role is required.
- Proficiency with anesthetic and sedation monitoring, phlebotomy, catheter placement, patient restraint, and other technical skills performed routinely in a general medicine or shelter environment. We will perform a skill assessment during the interview process.
- Initiative and desire to help others without being asked.
- Well organized and professional with the ability to shift priorities as needed to adapt to change.
- Willingness to work occasional weekend hours (4-5 times per year) to assist with community clinics.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. Periodically throughout the day.
- Ability to stand, kneel, squat and bend and reach throughout the day.
- Working conditions include working alone at times, outside in varying weather conditions and subject to frequent interruptions.
Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
