Position Summary
The Holton-Arms Upper School History and Social Sciences Teacher is an engaging educator dedicated to fostering historical thinking, civic understanding, and intellectual curiosity in our students. They are responsible for designing and facilitating a student-centered curriculum with teaching assignments that may include United States history, ancient and modern world history, and other departmental offerings based on school needs and the candidate’s experience. The ideal candidate is an educator who genuinely enjoys working with Upper School students and understands the intellectual, social, and emotional development of adolescents. Beyond the classroom, expectations include fulfilling assigned duties as required, communicating effectively with students and parents, and working collaboratively with other teachers in the department and division, as well as with administrators. Upper School teachers are also expected to advise a small group of students and generally support the day-to-day experience of Upper School students. Teachers serve as advisors, mentors, and role models responsible for preserving a positive learning environment, one where teachers are committed to all of our students’ well-being, academic excellence, and supporting our Global Education and Diversity institutional priorities.
Qualifications & Experiences
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in History, government, education, or a related humanities or social sciences field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: 3 to 5 years of successful teaching or teaching-related experience, preferably in an Upper School or secondary school environment. Demonstrated ability to support the academic, social, and emotional development of adolescents.
- Content Expertise: Strong background in history required, with the flexibility and interest to teach Upper School courses in United States history, world history, and other history or social sciences offerings as needed. Ability to help students engage with historical scholarship, primary and secondary sources, and complex questions across multiple perspectives.
- Collaborative Practice: Proven ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment, including actively contributing to curriculum design, sharing pedagogical ideas, and partnering with colleagues in support of students and the broader school community.
- Pedagogical Skill: Demonstrated skill in designing engaging, student-centered learning experiences that promote critical thinking, discussion, inquiry, and analytical writing. Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and thoughtful integration of educational technology to deepen learning.
- Student Connection: Builds strong relationships with students and creates a classroom environment that balances intellectual challenge with support, encouraging students to take academic risks and grow as confident thinkers and communicators.

Salary & Benefits
The average salary range for this position is $70,000 - $100,000, the exact salary to be determined based on education and experience. We use a step scale to determine teacher salary. Additional stipends are available for coaching, certain club sponsorship and significant commitments outside of the classroom.
