Position Summary

The Upper School English Teacher is a dynamic educator dedicated to the well being and intellectual and growth of young women. The successful candidate will design and deliver a rigorous, student-centered curriculum that aligns with the Holton-Arms Course of Study, ranging from foundational literary analysis to advanced seminars. Beyond the classroom, this role serves as a mentor and collaborator, fostering a culture of curiosity and self-expression that empowers students to find their voices. By integrating modern technology and diverse perspectives, the teacher ensures that every student is prepared to navigate and contribute to a global community.

 

Responsibilities

  • Academic Excellence: Design and implement challenging, division-appropriate lesson plans that align with the upper school English Course of Study, emphasizing critical thinking, analytical writing, and literary analysis. 
  • Student-Centered Instruction: Foster an inclusive classroom environment that promotes active learning, risk-taking, and student agency through various instructional modalities and the integration of educational technology.
  • Assessment and Feedback: Provide consistent, high-quality feedback on student work and maintain rigorous academic standards while offering the supportive demeanor necessary for student growth.
  • Collaboration and Commitment: Participate actively in departmental meetings, division-wide faculty sessions, and school-wide professional development to ensure a cohesive educational experience.
  • Community Engagement: Serve as a dedicated member of the Holton-Arms community by attending school activities and contributing to the "soul and spirit" of the school through mentorship or extracurricular leadership.
  • Professional Growth: Demonstrate a commitment to personal renewal and lifelong learning by staying current with pedagogical trends and literary scholarship.

Qualifications & Experiences

  • Education: Master’s degree in English, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field is required.
  • Experience: Three to five years of successful teaching experience in a rigorous, college-preparatory upper school environment.
  • Pedagogical Skill: Proven ability to teach complex literary analysis and writing mechanics while adapting to the unique learning styles of young women.
  • Values Alignment: A deep commitment to the education of girls and a demonstrated ability to foster an equitable, respectful, and just community.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Preferred: Experience coaching competitive sports or leading significant extracurricular activities is highly desirable.

Salary & Benefits

The average salary range for this position is $49,000.00 – $125,000.00, the exact salary to be determined based on education and experience. Additional stipends are available for coaching, certain club sponsorship and significant commitments outside of the classroom. Benefits include health insurance with a generous employer contribution to medical, dental and vision; life and disability insurance; 403b retirement savings with an employer match and non-elective contribution; employee assistance program, tuition remission for eligible children; professional development opportunities; paid parental leave after one year of employment; paid sick and personal days; and lunch is provided on school days.
