What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Custodian position at Holt United Methodist Church?
Position Summary:
The Building/Grounds Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment in the church building and adjoining grounds. This role includes regular cleaning of key areas, periodic deep cleaning of additional spaces, and ensuring the facility is well-maintained for worship services, meetings, community groups and events. This person will work with the Property Team Chair and volunteers.
Custodial Duties:
· Vacuum, clean and scrub all floors (including individual offices), dusting furniture and fixtures, cleaning walls and windows, cleaning kitchen and toilet facilities, and cleaning sidewalks
o Bathroom Cleaning: Clean and disinfect toilets, sinks and countertops; replenish soap, paper towels and toilet paper; sweep and mop floors and empty all trash cans at least weekly and as close to Sunday as possible
o Kitchen: Clean countertops, sinks and appliances; sweep and mop floors; empty trash and recycling bins
o Sanctuary: Vacuum floors; dust pews, chairs, piano, organ and other surfaces; straighten hymnals and other items
o Entry and Hallways, East Room, Fellowship Hall: Vacuum or sweep and mop floors; clean windows, doors and other glass surfaces (ensuring that the areas are free from dead insects); remove trash and ensure that spaces are tidy and welcoming.
· Dust, vacuum and clean windows in church office, pastor’s office, conference rooms, library, at least monthly, nursery and classrooms weekly
· Order required supplies such as cleaning agents, light bulbs and paper products
· Deep cleaning a specific area(s) of the church at the direction of the Property Team and/or the Pastor on monthly basis
· Address any additional cleaning needs as requested
Maintenance Duties:
· Operate and maintain mechanical heating and ventilation systems in an efficient manner to save energy and maintenance costs and yet provide reasonable comfort
· Replace broken and defective light bulbs, tubes, fuses and ballasts
· Repair equipment and fixtures as permissible for unlicensed contractors. Other needed repairs or maintenance /equipment needs should be reported promptly to the Property Team, and arrangements made with the appropriate licensed contractor as directed
· Correct any citation(s) by the Ingham County Health Department during their inspection within the time limit specified
Church Building/Grounds & Security Duties:
· Lock and unlock church on Sundays and other days when arrangements have not been made
· Make daily security checks of doors and windows, and make sure that lights are off when leaving on Sundays and other times as needed
· Be observant while on the premises to ensure that doors and windows are secure and that staff are aware of your presence
· Inspect fire hazards and correct where possible. If that is not possible, alert Property Team of the hazard and needed corrective action
· Arrange the sanctuary, chapel, reception areas for weddings and special events as scheduled through the Church Office. Monitor church calendar to be aware of upcoming events
· Exterior duties as needed in conjunction with volunteers and/or contractors
· Schedule and be present when third parties such as “The Bug Man,” boiler/furnace repair persons, etc. need access to the building
· Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Pastor or the Property Team consistent with this position
· Occasional mowing of grass
· Making sure that sidewalks are free from snow and ice when applicable
Other Requirements: Ability to complete physical labor, including but not limited to, bending, lifting, climbing and moving heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) as necessary to perform essential functions of the position. Must have a good understanding of cleaning techniques and safety procedures. Employment contingent upon successful background check and acceptable driving record. The Pastor is the direct supervisor for this position.
Dress Code: Clothing must be clean and in good repair and suitable for required tasks.
Hours Per Week: 20-25 hours per week to ensure that cleaning of primary areas in addition to monthly tasks. Scheduling can be flexible but should not interfere with groups meeting at the church. At least one work period must be Friday or Saturday to ensure a clean space for Sunday morning worship. Extra hours may occasionally be requested from the Property Team. Sunday morning is also mandatory to open the Church and ensure that the sidewalks are clean.
Salary: $15.00-$17.00 per hour, depending on experience. Review will be given after 90 days with potential pay increase based on performance.
