Description
The Quality Control Technician supports the quality assurance program by sampling, testing, monitoring, and reporting on the quality of ready-mix concrete, asphalt, and aggregate products in the field and laboratory. Reporting under the direction of the Lab Manager, the technician ensures that products meet both internal standards and external specifications. The technician plays a critical role in maintaining consistent product quality and supporting operational efficiency.
Essential Functions of the Position:
• FIELD LAB TESTING: Perform field and lab sampling and testing of ready-mix concrete, asphalt, and aggregates according to ACI and industry standards.
• MATERIAL & MIX DESIGN SUPPORT: Assist with adjustments to materials and mix designs at plants and job sites based on test results and observations.
• DATA REVIEW & VALIDATION: Review and interpret test results for accuracy, precision, and repeatability.
• TESTING PROCEDURES: Conduct calculations to validate compliance with product specifications.
• QUALITY CONTROL: Verify testing procedures and identify any potential issues affecting result integrity.
• CALCULATIONS & REPORTING: Complete testing such as slump, unit weight, air content, and casting cylinders per project and industry requirements, to support product compliance and process improvements.
• TRAVEL SITES: Travel to various job sites, batch plants, and lab locations as required for sampling and testing.
Skills and Knowledge:
• Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at job sites, plants, and labs.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with internal and external customers.
• Working knowledge of quality control procedures, testing standards, and lab equipment.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to deliver technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Basic math and data analysis skills to support interpretation of test data.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks independently in a fast-paced field and lab environment.
Requirements:
• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree in construction technology or materials science is a plus.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in materials testing or quality control in the construction or manufacturing industry.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Must be able to work with or without direct supervision.
• Must have a valid Class C driver’s license with a clean driving record.
•Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy samples, operating testing tools, and working outdoors in variable weather.
Preferred Certifications (Not Required):
• ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician – Grade I
• Caltrans or state-specific certification in materials testing
