Position Title: Set Up Operator
Position Type: Full Time
Reports To: Machine Shop Lead
Position Location: Baer Brakes, Phoenix, AZ
Pay: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
The Set-Up Operator is responsible for preparing, setting up, and optimizing CNC lathes (primary focus) and/or manual machining equipment to support production operations. This role ensures machines are properly tooled, calibrated, and operating efficiently to meet production, quality, and safety standards while minimizing downtime. Experience with CNC mills is a plus.
Job Responsibilities:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform machine set-ups on CNC lathes (primary responsibility), mills, and/or other machining equipment to meet production requirements
- Load programs, perform edits, and troubleshoot machining issues as needed
- Set tooling, fixtures, and offsets to ensure parts meet specifications
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
- Adjust speeds and feeds based on material and machining requirements
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to machine performance, tooling, and part quality
- Read and interpret blueprints, prints, and technical drawings
- Maintain accurate records of scrap, inspections, and production performance
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of cutting tools and equipment
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area
- Communicate with supervisors, quality, and production teams to resolve issues and improve processes
- Assist in training machine operators as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned to support production, quality, and operational needs
Qualifications:
- Experience with Horizontal, vertical machines. Mazak and Fanuc controls. Lathe experience is a plus
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Minimum of 5 years of machine set-up experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong experience setting up CNC lathes
- Experience with CNC machine (lathe required; mill experience a plus)
- Strong understanding of G-code and M-code
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Experience using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.)
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Basic understanding of machining processes, speeds, and feeds
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Preferred:
- Experience editing CNC programs
- Trade school or technical training in machining or related field
- Experience setting up both CNC lathes and mills

- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 10 hours per shift)
- Ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs as needed
- Frequent bending, reaching, and use of hands
Work Environment
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and temperature variations (hot/cold)
- Use of required PPE, including safety glasses and other protective equipment as needed
