Job Overview
Holiday Inn Express by IHG in Hillsville, VA is seeking a dependable, energetic, and team-oriented Houseman to support our housekeeping and maintenance department by helping maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our guests. The Houseman position plays a key role in ensuring public areas, guest floors, and housekeeping/maintenance operations meet IHG brand standards by assisting room attendants, stocking supplies, responding to guest requests, maintaining hotel cleanliness, and performing basic maintenance tasks throughout the property.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain public areas, including the lobby, hallways, breakfast area, public restrooms, stairwells, and entrances.
- Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and remove trash throughout the hotel.
- Stock housekeeping closets with linens, towels, amenities, and cleaning supplies.
- Assist room attendants by removing soiled linens, collecting trash, and transporting supplies.
- Deliver guest-requested items such as towels, pillows, blankets, cribs, and toiletries.
- Perform deep-cleaning projects as assigned.
- Help maintain exterior areas, including sidewalks, parking areas, landscaping, and hotel entrances.
- Assist with laundry operations when needed such as folding laundry.
- Complete basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, changing HVAC filters, unclogging drains, tightening fixtures, touching up paint, replacing batteries, and other minor repairs as assigned.
- Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms and public areas to identify maintenance concerns alongside the maintenance engineer.
- Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and guest concerns promptly to management.
- Assist management with preventive maintenance projects and property upkeep.
- Follow all hotel safety, security, and IHG cleanliness standards.
- Provide friendly and professional guest service at all times.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous hotel, housekeeping, janitorial, custodial, or maintenance experience is a plus but not required.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools and minor repair work preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and property appearance.
- Positive attitude and willingness to assist in multiple departments.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Weekend and holiday availability required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb stairs throughout the shift.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment, ladders, and basic hand tools.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
