The Holden Arboretum
Opportunity:
The Holden Arboretum Police Department seeks an officer to work within their team. Officers are responsible for ensuring the protection of Holden Forests & Garden’s buildings, assets and natural resources, and the general safety of all guests and employees at the Holden Arboretum. This position responds to criminal activity, incidents, complaints, disturbances and performs investigations as necessary. In addition, the officer works with all other departments across the organization and closely the Guest Services department to help control traffic, assists with wildlife management and performs a variety of other activities. The officer works with all HF&G departments to promote the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Position Details:
- Permanent, non-exempt position
- 24-32 hours a week, flexible based on candidate's needs
- Training is provided
- Must have a flexible schedule to be able to work weekends, evenings and some holidays
- This position is supervised by the Chief of Police
Key Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities of the Police Officer include:
Protects Holden Arboretum buildings, assets, natural resources, visitors and employees:
- Supports the Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission, vision, values and core commitment to the visitor experience and community engagement
- Provides protection and security for the Holden Arboretum’s guests, employees and properties by patrolling the grounds by vehicle, bike, foot or other motorized vehicles
- Enforces laws of the state of Ohio and regulations specific to The Holden Arboretum
- Investigates violations; issues warnings and citations as warranted and completes any related enforcement incident reports; conducts searches and seizures, preserves evidence and makes arrests only when absolutely necessary
- Performs regular inspections of buildings and natural areas to identify unsafe or unsecured conditions, or evidence of vandalism, trespassing or natural damage, and reports anything out-of-the-ordinary
- Anticipates safety and security problems and looks for opportunities to be a part of the solution
- Coordinates and / or assists with search & rescue and recovery operations
- Assists in medical emergencies and performs first-aid or CPR as needed
- Provides mutual aid and assists other law enforcement agencies, as necessary
- Provides security for cash-on-hand and makes bank deposits as required
- Attends court to provide testimony, as required
Serves guests and visitors:
- Maintains visibility and accessibility to guests by having an ongoing presence on property, particularly in Holden Arboretum’s core areas
- Provides information regarding permits, events, amenities, programs, and the location of activities and other specific points of interests
- Has traffic control and parking responsibility for various events
- Inspects trails for unsafe conditions and takes appropriate action to ensure the safety of guests
- Ensures guest and member permits are displayed properly
- Provides crowd control for large events on the Holden Arboretum property
- Enforces legal and organizational regulations for the use of alcohol by guests, members, and employees, when appropriate
- Promotes a good neighbor relationship between Holden Arboretum’s, adjacent landowners, and conservation easement holders
Other:
- Assists in monitoring vehicle and equipment logs; maintaining enforcement records and tracking monthly departmental statistics; and maintaining accurate, up-to-date records and files, as needed and as assigned
- Assist in maintaining law enforcement records, log sheets, citations and other related paperwork with final approval being performed by the Chief of Police
- Assists with wildlife management activities
- Aids in training new officers and attends in-service training classes
- Helps maintain patrol vehicle and other related police department equipment as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- High school degree or equivalent, required
- 21 years of age upon appointment
- Current Ohio Driver’s license with less than 3 points
- Current Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate
- Current CPR, AED & First Aid Training certificate preferred or be able to certify within one year of start date
- Qualifies annually with all department issued firearms
- Able to pass an extensive background investigation which includes work history, education, reference checks, driving record, criminal history, and credit history
- Candidate may also be required to pass a medical check
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Work in various settings to include inside an office and outside patrolling the grounds by foot, bike, golf cart or motor vehicle
- Perform tasks in all weather conditions; temperatures may range from 0-100 F
- Walk and work on wet, uneven, slippery terrain
- Stand for extended periods of time
- Regular lifting and carrying of up to 30 pounds, occasionally 45 pounds
- Ability to work on structures that include 202 stairs and platforms elevated 65-feet to 120-feet above ground
- Handle and remove wildlife as necessary, including, but not limited to, live, injured and deceased
