The Sommelier - Supervisor plays a key on-the-floor leadership role at Holbrook House, working closely with the General Manager & Beverage Director and management team to support daily service execution, wine and beverage excellence, and team development. This is a hands-on, service-driven position that combines advanced wine knowledge, guest-facing hospitality, and supervisory responsibilities during service.
As a leader on the floor, the Sommelier - Supervisor sets the tone for elevated guest experiences, supports FOH teammates in real time, and helps uphold the standards that define Holbrook House as a club without membership. This role also assists with the execution of small private events for Holbrook House and, as needed, events within The Conservatory at One Sansome.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Execute polished, intuitive wine service while acting as a floor leader during service periods.
- Support day-to-day FOH operations, working closely with management to ensure seamless coordination between FOH and BOH.
- Supervise service flow during busy periods, assisting with pacing, table turns, and guest flow to maintain efficiency without compromising hospitality.
- Serve as a constant on-the-floor presence, providing real-time coaching and guidance to servers, bartenders, and support staff.
- Uphold and reinforce Holbrook House service standards, leading by example at all times.
- Anticipate guest needs and deliver thoughtful, personalized hospitality at every touchpoint.
- Maintain deep product knowledge across wine, spirits, beer, and cocktails; confidently guide guests and support staff recommendations.
- Assist with onboarding and training of new FOH team members, particularly in wine service and beverage knowledge.
- Participate in and help reinforce ongoing hospitality and beverage training initiatives.
- Support pre-shift meetings, side work assignments, and shift handovers as needed.
- Handle guest inquiries or concerns professionally, escalating to management when appropriate.
- Assist with the setup, execution, and breakdown of small private events within the restaurant.
- Communicate with event hosts during service to ensure timing, expectations, and guest satisfaction are met.
- Help manage event teams on the floor to deliver organized, guest-focused service.
- Support reporting of guest feedback, service challenges, and operational opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain working knowledge of safety, sanitation, and health department standards.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2–3 years experience as a sommelier, lead server, or supervisory FOH role in a high-end, high-volume environment.
- Strong foundation in fine wine service, with working knowledge of beer, spirits, and cocktails.
- Hospitality-driven mindset with a passion for guest experience and service excellence.
- Natural leadership presence with the ability to coach, support, and motivate peers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with both guests and teammates.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure service environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- High level of professionalism with a positive, can-do attitude.
- Exceptional guest service skills with an emphasis on personalized experiences.
- Proven self-starter able to work independently while supporting a collaborative team culture.
- Experience supporting private events a plus.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to multitask efficiently.
- Working knowledge of Toast and SevenRooms a plus.
- Flexible availability including days, evenings, weekends, and non-consecutive days off as dictated by service and event needs.
- Ability to stand and walk for 8–10 hour shifts.
- Ability to bend, stoop, lift up to 25 lbs, reach overhead, and perform repetitive motions.
- Current California Food Handler Certification.
- Current Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification.
