REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager
POSITION SUMMARY: Assist in the design of structural concrete and steel systems across a variety of projects under the guidance of a Professional Engineer (PE). This role supports the preparation of technical sketches for drafting, review of shop and construction drawings, and coordination with vendors, external engineers, and clients as needed. The position also involves assisting with calculations and ensuring structural design packages align with project specifications, applicable design codes, and industry standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in developing economical and effective structural designs under the direction of a PE.
- Support the preparation of design calculations and sketches for shop and construction drawings produced by the drafting department.
- Assist in reviewing shop and construction drawings for accuracy and completeness.
- Provide support to the Sales team with pre-bid design and layout activities.
- Coordinate with the Engineering Manager, Project Managers, and PE to support proper design implementation.
- Assist in reviewing geotechnical reports and soil conditions for specific project sites.
- Participate in site inspections of silos, chimneys, stacks, buildings, and other structures; assist in preparing reports with findings and recommendations.
- Travel on a limited basis for meetings and project-related responsibilities.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain within a year of employment.
- Foundational knowledge of structural steel and concrete design principles.
- Basic understanding of applicable design codes and standards (e.g., AISC, ACI) with the ability to apply them under guidance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with engineering calculation tools is a plus.
- Exposure to AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks preferred.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to learn and apply technical concepts quickly.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and take direction from senior engineers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK CONDITIONS:
- Primarily a desk-based role.
- Limited exposure to industrial environments based on project needs.
- Willingness to travel, including overnight stays, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis preferred) or a related field.
- Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Exposure to structural analysis, design software, or drafting tools through coursework or hands-on experience is a plus.
