Career Center Student Employment
Salary: $12.00 -$13.00 per hour
I. Position Purpose
The purpose of the Career Center Student Associate position is to support the daily operations, programs, and services of the Career and University Center while helping Hocking College students develop career readiness skills. Student Associates serve in a peer-focused environment, assisting students with resumes, LinkedIn profiles, interviewing skills, professional communication, and career exploration. This position provides valuable hands-on experience in career services, student affairs, event planning, customer service, and professional development while contributing to student success and workforce readiness initiatives.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Career Development and Peer Advising
- Assist students in developing and improving resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and other professional job search materials.
- Provide constructive feedback on resumes using Career Center standards and best practices.
- Assist students in identifying and communicating their skills, experiences, and professional identity to employers.
- Support mock interview activities and provide feedback on interview responses and professional presentation.
- Help students develop networking skills, elevator pitches, and professional communication techniques.
- Assist Cornerstone and other student success initiatives by helping students complete career readiness requirements.
- Provide information regarding Career Center resources, services, and employment opportunities.
Career Programs and Events
- Provide front desk support by greeting visitors, answering phones, responding to emails, and assisting walk-in students.
- Schedule appointments for Career Center staff and maintain appointment records.
- Assist with data entry, filing, record keeping, and office organization.
- Maintain a clean, welcoming, and professional office environment.
- Assist with creating, distributing, and updating informational materials, handouts, flyers, and promotional content.
- Support marketing and outreach efforts for Career Center programs and services.
Handshake Platform Support
- Assist students with navigating and utilizing the Handshake career management platform.
- Provide basic troubleshooting and support for students and employers using Handshake.
- Help maintain and update student, employer, and job posting information within the platform.
- Complete Handshake Academy training and maintain proficiency in Career Center technology systems.
Career Closet Support
- Assist with organizing, maintaining, and promoting the Career Closet.
- Help students select professional and business casual attire for interviews, internships, career fairs, and employment opportunities.
- Assist with inventory management, donation processing, and organization of clothing and accessories.
Graduation and Student Success Support
- Assist with graduation-related activities including graduation surveys, celebrations, commencement rehearsals, and ceremony support.
- Support cap and gown distribution and related record keeping.
- Assist with Convocation and New Student Orientation activities as needed.
General Responsibilities
- Work independently and collaboratively with Career Center staff, faculty, employers, and fellow student employees.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
- Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, reliability, and strong customer service skills.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
III. Qualifications – Education, Experience, and Skills
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time Hocking College student.
- Must meet federal requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to learn new software systems and technology platforms.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
- Interest in helping fellow students achieve academic, career, and personal success.
- Experience with Handshake, LinkedIn, Canva, or other career-related platforms is preferred but not required.
- Previous customer service, leadership, peer mentoring, or student involvement experience is preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and assist with light physical tasks as needed.
- Willingness and ability to complete all required training and professional development assigned by the supervisor, Human Resources, or the College.
